I recall a TV interview of the late Liz Taylor. She commented on crying scenes in various movies. She said she and others kept half of an onion handy, but out of sight of the cameras. When it was time for the teary scene, the actors would lean over and take a deep whiff of the onion to help them generate tears for the camera.
There were harsh punishments for Paul Hornung as well.
