Armed with surgical masks and hand-made placards drawing attention to clean air, Westfield Concerned Citizens continued their opposition to a proposed 431 megawatt natural gas fired electrical generating plant here Thursday.

The group, which formed shortly after the $400 million plant was proposed in 2008 by Pioneer Valley Energy Center, was among more than 150 people at North Middle School attending a public hearing on a federal Environment Protection Agency pending air quality permit for the plant.

“The mask makes a statement,” said registered nurse Gail S. Bean of Westfield. “The mask prevents toxins from entering the lungs,” she explained while passing out the surgical masks to anyone who indicated support for the concerned citizens group.

Mary Ann Babinski, a founding member of the group, said “We are asking EPA to deny the air quality permit based on evidence we have showing clean energy does not come from a smokestack.”

Ya know last summer all of San Diego County and Northern Baja lost power for about 24 hours due to some maintenance snafu in a Yuma, Az substation knocking a bunch of power plants offline. A couple of million people in the dark until power plants could be restarted and slowly brought back online.

Radio call-in shows were a very popular way to keep in touch with events. You wouldn’t believe how many called in to say that they noticed so many stars in the sky during the blackout besides the ones saying they were eating their ice cream from the freezer compartment before it melted.

Summertime, nighttime lows in the mid fifties at worst.

Nope, all of those energy forms produce carbon dioxide and fecal matter. I am sure they’d loudly protest such (while crapping in the street).

Why would you want to waste perfectly good natural gas on power production, when you could be using gasified coal?

The Northeast somehow hasn't quite yet figured out that #2 fuel-oil is for diesels, natural gas is for home heating, coal and hydro are for power production.

“Funny, the directory of registered nurses doesn’t have her name in it.”

Has it been established this is Massachusetts and not Connecticut? The “Pioneer Valley” (Conn. River) runs through both. Would have been nice for some indication in the OP.

Take names, turn off their power. Remove them from the grid and give them $100 to go buy their replacement solar panels.
