Gingrich Has Most Exceptional Moment of 2012 Election Cycle

Speaking at the Greenville/Spartanburg GOP Bronze Elephant Dinner in Duncan, South Carolina on Friday night, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, in response to a question about what the American dream is about, had the most exceptional moment of the 2012 cycle.

As he is emerging as the chief anti-Mitt Romney challenger in South Carolina (Gingrich is a strong second, according to numerous South Carolina polls released this week), Gingrich described the America many feel will be just a memory if President Barack Obama wins another term and articulated why the preservation of that America should never be taken for granted and how Americans should be proactive in ensuring their children and grandchildren inherit an American with gritty, Jacksonian values not unlike the one they inherited.

“Countries can die,” Gingrich powerfully said, referring to a lesson he learned while his father was stationed overseas. “And Leadership can make an enormous difference.”

Gingrich noted that he grew up surrounded “by people who were passionate about America” who loved America because “they did not have that much economically” and was raised by a grandmother who was from a generation that instilled in him a belief that “George Washington was a heroic figure and the founding fathers led remarkable lives.”

“We didn’t think we were poor,” Gingrich said. “ We were Americans, and therefore we were rich, we had freedoms and a sense of safety.”

Gingrich said that the “American dream is to recognize first that we exist under our Creator with unalienable rights” and, therefore, “no president, judge, or bureaucrat can take away our rights.”

just a reminder: Newt stayed positive for 3 weeks while Willard savaged him, and I don’t call discussing Willard’s history at Bain a petty attack.. Sarah just said tonight she agreed with Newt and everything should be on the table as far as discussion in the republican party ...

Too bad the American electorate is too stupid to understand any of this.

I agree wholeheartedly with you FRiend and suggest that all FReepers watch this video and send it out to everyone in their address book.

There are one or two sarcastic quips at the Obama administration that are actually entertaining.

The American Dream topic begins at 23:32.

Wise and magnanimous, except for the “Jacksonian values.”

It amazes me that Newt can lay out concepts like this (as well as his public defense of Christianity) and all his detractors can do is look for petty "is he positive" or "sitting with Nancy Pelosi, blah, blah, blah." NO ONE, and I repeat NO ONE talks like this! These are simple yet profound concepts that he articulates with amazing clarity. He's teaching us about our country because we've forgotten. Newt is not the Messiah, he is not perfect. Remember, that guy is already President! Newt is a flawed human being who is very smart and who completely understands this moment in history. And I would argue he is the only one who can articulate it to the American people. He is proclaiming truth and we need to allow him to bring that debate to ALL of America! We don't need a RINO and we don't need a Rookie. We need a man who can restore the concept of a FREE AMERICA! I like both Rick's and I believe they can both be great participants in this process, but this speech (and virtually all Newt's speeches) set him apart as the prime articulator of the American idea.

God's speed Newt!

Yes, that 33 minutes should be required listening for anyone voting in this primary, or the general election, for that matter!

“Too bad Newt is too undisciplined to maintain a consistent message, or stay positive and avoid petty attacks.,.....”

Tried it your way with GWB.....The Dems used that tactic to drive d’s approval from hi 80’s to the 20’s......

Give me a counter-puncher every time!

Blaming Gingrich for responding to vicious Romney attack ads reminds me of people who blame a woman for being raped.

Maybe we should demand that Romney stay focused, on message, and avoid petty attacks on Conservative Republican candidates? After all isn’t Obama the one we are out to defeat?

In all the clamor I have yet to hear the MSM, or “conservatives” on this forum decry Romney’s sleasy anti-Newt ads. Kinda makes one wonder doesn’t it?

For all of Newt’s faults, real or imagined, Romney isn’t even in the same league.

Newt can talk the talk. I don’t think anyone can dispute that.

All I will say, though, is that it is vitally important to remember that Newt is and has always been a politician through-and-through. You don’t become Speaker of the House without being that. Politicians ply their trade in fancy words. The really effective ones know all the right things to say to warm the hearts of us common folks. They’re great at hitting all the right emotional notes on the organ of the human soul.

I’d be cautious about singing the praises of a politician just because they know the right words to say. That’s simply what effective politicians do. At the end of the day, I fear that a Gingrich presidency will serve that same Establishment that works so desperately to move us away from the America of yesteryear.

Just because someone “gets” something and knows how to speak to it does not necessarily mean it is something they favor in their heart. If it comes down to it I will give the guy my vote but it will take a lot more than fine words to gain my trust.

Good words. Will save them to send back to prez Gingrich should he get weak kneed under pressure from the likes of schumer and his ilk.

I, myself, don't have a lot of faith in the American electorate.

I agree with you. A few years back I said that 2/3 of Americans were brain dead. They knew little about America and what America needs to survive. I still feel that at least 1/3 of the electorate never grew up. These lost soles will destroy America if they could and not even realize that they will destroy themselves.

God bless Newt.

I’m 40 and I would go out and run a mile for Newt if he asked me to. I remember very well the Republican Revolution of 1994 and who was responsible for it. It is legendary. Newt is a giant even among giants.

At least you acknowledge that. Other gingrich supporters keep attacking freepers who say that, claiming Gingrich did no such thing.

It was a good step, and the only reason I am still considering Gingrich.

Could be. He has “Winnie”s” virtues, and a lot of his vices. Churchill was never popular with a large segment of his Party. He could be an ass. But looking at this speech today, I was amazed by what amounts to a tour de force. Hope he meant what he said, and sticks to this message.
