What They Don’t Want to Talk About [NY Times Sunday Editorial]

EDITORIAL What They Don’t Want to Talk About January 14, 2012

Ever since Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry started criticizing Mitt Romney’s actions at Bain Capital — and talking about the thousands of people laid off as a result of Bain’s investments — party leaders have essentially told them to shut up. That response is a pretty good indication of how deeply party elders fear the issue of economic inequality in the campaign to come.

“What the hell are you doing, Newt?” Rudolph Giuliani asked Thursday on Fox News. “This is what Saul Alinsky taught Barack Obama, and what you’re saying is part of the reason we’re in so much trouble right now.”

Mr. Giuliani has one thing right: Republicans are indeed in growing trouble as more voters begin to realize how much the party’s policies — dismantling regulations, slashing taxes for the rich, weakening unions — have contributed to inequality and the yawning distance between the middle class and the top end.

The more President Obama talks about narrowing that gap, the more his popularity ratings have risen while those of Congress plummet. Two-thirds of Americans now say there is a strong conflict between the rich and the poor, according to a Pew survey released last week, making it the greatest source of tension in American society.

That makes Mr. Romney and his party vulnerable, as he clearly knows. He said on Wednesday that issues of wealth distribution should be discussed only “in quiet rooms.” And he accused the president of using an “envy-oriented, attack-oriented” approach, “entirely inconsistent with the concept of one nation under God.”

Not so long ago when this source was used, it was called the Slimes, and the articles were mocked for their far-far-leftism.

I guess We’re All Occupiers Now...

Not me. Hell no.

It says that Romney is the guy both Obama and the Establishment would like to engage.

There sure is and it’s not just all the poor being jealous of the hard working rich. The politically connected increasingly use the government to get rich. Whether it’s allowing illegal immigration or using eminent domain for private development, it’s still just more class warfare. Now the ethically challenged members of the elite are worried that a little light will be shined on their lives.

I agree. And who is best on taking on crony capitalism? Santorum? Certainly not Gingrich with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and of course not Romney.

Maybe it’s just me but the income disparity between rich and poor doesn’t bother me half as much as the number of unemployed (which certainly contributes to the disparity).

Is there no income disparity at the Times, i.e., between Pinch and copy editors, mail room personnel, etc.? How many times the salary of the mail room clerk does Pinch earn?

How many clerks would the severance package the Times gave its recently departed CEO hire? Or doesn’t it matter because the rules the Times would impose on others doesn’t apply to them? Who do they think they ARE? Congress?

Class warfare is a one trick pony. It’s what the Left always says about every Republican. Remember when they couldn’t ever say just “George Bush”, but had to say “George Herbert Walker Bush”? How about the fake news story that Bush I hadn’t ever seen a check out register scanner? They derided Reagan’s economic plan as trickle down. Blah, blah, blah...

This is their playbook and all the while Dems and Obama are cavorting and carrying water for the crony capitalists and liberal billionaires. It gets old fast.

You could fill whole libraries with the things the NY Times doesn’t want to talk about.... And won’t.... About democrats.

And there would be an entire wing about Barack Obama.

NOW is the time to vet this thing, if it’s not done now the Dims will do it during the general. I’m betting this is the issue that clutters the campaign this fall.

People should forget the gap between rich and poor and concentrate on trying to create a tide that lifts all boats. The gap between rich and poor is greatest in those countries where the government controls every detail of life. We need less regulation, not more. The average person is far worse off now than four years ago and a few more years of liberal insanity will put us all back to spending every waking minute trying to find food. Anyone who thinks Obama is going to solve any problems for working people should just sit down and write letters to Santa Claus.

Only the Slimers care about "income inequality." That is why no one took the Occupiers seriously (except the media who liked the easy stories.) Class warfare just isn't part of the American DNA, and these leftwing tools can't make it so. In the end they will fall back on racism, which is in the American DNA and seek to use that to achieve their goals of disruption and division.

I totally agree. It seems that we are caught between the elites and the Acorn crowd. Both want more government control of the true producers, which is the small businesses and entrepeneurs which risk their own money. The elites want to get rich shuffling other peoples money with no personal accountability or risk and the acorn crowd just wants to be handed a middle class living without any work on their part.

That’s what’s happening here in the US. The more the government at all levels interferes, the greater the income gap gets.
