Does the federal government collect a fee from gun owners who own a noise suppressor (silencer)?
“Suppressor” is a proper term for devices commonly known as “silencers.” “Silencer” is literally incorrect (they don’t make guns silent, but is accepted as correct. “Silencer” was originally a trademark of the Maxim company.
They are legal in many states (usually not for hunting) but require a $200 transfer tax, plus fingerprints, background check, and a sign-off by your local Sheriff or Police Chief.
This is an excellent move in the right direction. The question isn’t whether silencers should be legal, it’s whether they should be mandatory.
