Newt Gingrich apparently won Monday nights debate on Fox News, but likely this is a case of a last-second touchdown when you are down by two touchdowns. Seth Leibsohn of National Review Online gave the night to Newt: When he is right, he is great. The ongoing problem is when he is wrong. But tonight he was right about a lot, and said it better than anyone.
Newt showed his Tea Party side:
I think its very important for us to look at job creation. As a young member of Congress, I worked with President Ronald Reagan. We passed an economic growth package. We created 16 million jobs. The American people within a framework that Reagan had established created 16 million jobs.
As speaker I came back working with President Bill Clinton, we passed a very Reagan-like program, less regulation, lower taxes. Unemployment dropped to 4.2 percent. We created 11 million jobs. Now, those are real numbers that people can verify out in the open.
And I like that when asked about his plan for Social Security he brought back.
When Bush presented it 7 years ago, the press and the Democrats (and too many Republicans) blasted it because it would divert money from Social Security now we are diverting three times as much and calling it a payroll tax cut.
Anyway, From Newt:
Well, it is, as a historian, a fact-based model that has Galveston, Texas, and the entire country of Chile as testing grounds. Chile has done this. Jose Pineras glad to talk about it, the guy who created it, they have done it for over 30 years.

Good reply. I agree.
The question was definitely "low and inside"--but I think Juan might be more than a little tired of all those "white liberals" who are so full of the "soft bigotry of low expectations" that they don't realize how much damage their policies have done to the once-strong and family-oriented Black community.
Newt DOES realize this--as his response to Juan's question so brilliantly displayed. And--again from Juan's mood after the debate--I don't think he was upset or angered by how well Newt handled his "pitch".
He is actually a Big Fat Toe Sucker. . . . .
Never thought of that -
Juan could just be playing the part of “offended black liberal” in order to be a “foil” for Newt and to get some payback on the truly racist libs he’s been working with all his life.
Me either. I can't get excited about any of them, especially NOOT & MITSY. . . .
I have a simpler explanation....Juan’s a bonafide lib but still a class act. He got his a$$ handed to him and handled his b!tch slap like a man.
True.
But his endless "poor blacks" racist schtick has become unbearable.
It was way past the time for someone to hand him his butt on a platter.
I wouldn't be surprised if Newt expected Juan to play the race card on MLK Day and was locked, loaded and ready for it.
Yes, I want Mitt over Newt... in my sleep.
Newt is good at talking but he is like Nixon or Clinton. etc. They don’t care about anything but themselves.
He is great in Republican debates but put him in front of another audience and he will say whatever he needs to say to wow them. Hence he is on the couch with Nancy or endorsing individual mandates.
The biggest difference between Newt and Romney is that Newt has no problem collecting his cash from Freddie. Then being outraged when people call him on it!
For the record, Newt was shown the door (of being Speaker) by conservative Republicans.
I think if you watch the whole exchange again, and particularly Juan's reactions and his forceful, with some suppressed anger, restating of his follow up questions over the crowd noise (both applause for Newt and boos for the additional race-baiting questions), you'll see that he was speaking on behalf of Holder's people and not some 'foil' for Newt.
You can't convince me that Juan Williams conspired with Newt to get his butt handed to him like that.
Wow, you accuse Romney of being a CAPITALIST. Such a crime...
He is not a Crony Capitalist.
Many from all sides supported TARP and bailouts (I admit I was/am not one supporting same).
When has he had his hands out begging for money from taxpayers (note that if he takes advantage of programs available for everyone, that is neither Crony Capitalism or begging for taxpayer money. I take all of the deductions available to me too and don’t consider it bad form).
Ever heard of TARP.....BAILOUTS....! Romney advocated, like many estabishment types, and taxpayers footed the bill.
How much of TARP or the BAILOUTS did u get to deduct from your taxes? Just curious.....! You do know that you, your kids, and ur grandkids will pay for that don’t u?
BZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Wrong again. 0 for 3. As a matter of fact, for the record, Newt was kicked out by the Moderates(!) ....
"There is no doubt in my mind he had the votes to win the Speakership, but I'm not sure he had the votes to govern," said Kenneth M. Duberstein, a former White House chief of staff ... .... from the article (drum roll please) .....
"What I believe desperately needs to take place is to heal the alienation that currently exists," said Representative Steve Largent of Oklahoma, a conservative football Hall of Famer who announced his own challenge today to Mr. Gingrich's second-in-command, Representative Dick Armey of Texas.
The heart of the Speaker's problems, many Republicans said, is that he had never made an adequate adjustment from being the minority to being the majority, from intense backbench opposition to governing.
The hard-edged partisan bite that worked for Mr. Gingrich in the minority came across as stridency in power, Republicans said. ''Whenever we try to go on the offensive, the White House tries to make Newt the issue and whenever that happens we lose,'' said Peter T. King, a Republican from Long Island. ...... AND the "piste de résistance" ...
When Mr. Gingrich allowed Representative John R. Kasich of Ohio, the budget committee chairman, to try to rally House Republicans around a conservative blueprint for more than $100 billion in new savings, the moderates refused to back it.
Interesting reading ping.
” I do prefer Romney over Newt.”
You seem to be a ROMNEY SUPPORTER.
