The days of refinancing the house and buying a new car are over.

The two cars I was looking at for possible future (used) purchase turn out to both be imports; the Ford Edge and the Ford Fusion.

Heard on the news this morning that AAA is predicting “near” $5 gas by Memorial Day

The one silver lining, and it's a big one, is that this should take care of Comrade Zero's reelection. If it doesn't, we're done as a country anyway.

I had an 87 Dodge Ram 50 that hit 300,000 before the engine died.

For Giggles IF true?
The person who calculated this bit of information is now and has been a professor at
The University of West Virginia in Megaton for the last forty some years.

A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year.
A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons of gas a year.
So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.
The government claims 700,000 clunkers have been replaced so that’s 224 million gallons saved per year.
That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.
More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars.
So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.
We spent $8.57 for every $1.00 we saved.

I’m pretty sure they will do a better job with our health care, though.

Kind of funny, I still have my 1999 Jeep Cherokee that I bought new. The inline 6 is a good engine and it is a rare 5 speed stick shift. I also still have my 1991 4x4 Toyota pickup truck and plan on keeping it until the day it has to be hauled to the junk yard. I also call it my redneck truck since it shows some good wear and tear. My newest car is my 2006 Subaru WRX Turbo. All vehicles I run synthetic oil in them. Best thing, no car loans !

When I worked in my last company, I was talked to a few times about how i was paid enough money and should get rid of pickup and buy something newer. Of course the area where our office was at was kind of ghetto.

I have a 97 Ford Escort and a 2000 Ranger. between them they have nearly 450,000 miles. I still get 30-35mpg on the Escort and about 23 on the Ranger.

I saw (here at FR) it spelled vwalla the other day.

It took all I had as the posting police to refrain from commenting.

As someone who has bought and sold repairable.. your not kidding.

Even insurance company total outs are bringing 1000+ bucks on the auction block. And that is a 9-12 year old 150K plus car!

I am working on one right now. a 1997 Nissan Altima GXE. 134K on the clock. Light front end hit (Deer I think) and some mechanical problems. People are lining up to buy the car at $1995.

10 years ago it would have been a 600 dollar car fixed.

600 is what I paid for it before I started repairing it.

So true. You had any trouble wiping off the stains? (wink) Mine had the old light blue color, not exactly a chick magnet. Luckily, no girl said “Ewwww, I don’t want to be seen in that. I’m on the cheerleading squad, ya know?” I must have been doing something right..

All of my cars no matter who made them, started rusting somewhere. Usually in the wheelwell areas of the quarter panels.

This is a problem on most cars. The one thing I’ve done with all of them is clean out snow from these areas as soon as possible (salts) and do a couple underbody flushes in the winter, and in the drier months after a wash and dry, spray rust converter and then undercoating over that. It really does preserve your vehicles, stops the rust where it is, and gives additional protection you can reapply every year with a can or two.

I sold my old truck last year after 215,000 of good service.

I bought a nice used truck (F150), and plan to put at least that many miles on it.

‘97 F-250. Knock on steel, I can’t imagine why I’d ever get rid of it. My little brother (47) has finally grown up and quit leasing a new vehicle every two years. Has kept his F-150 for five years now and is learning how satisfying that can be.

“I do not own any car/truck with less than 100,000 miles on it.”
I’m there, yet again...

Until last month, neither of our daily drivers had less than 250,000 miles on them.

Wife’s Pontiac Montana met a untimely fate when a 08 Focus slid in to the intersection and my wife hit it.

Wife and kids where ok, other driver ok. Old Pontiac drove to it’s final resting spot. Focus left on a tow truck.

it was the second total out for the Pontiac. I could have fixed it, but a 01 Venture (same van) presented it’s self as a good replacement at a good price. It’s a spring chicken in our stable at 185K

The old van is resting in “wait”.. Never know when I might need a part. Just wish they where the same color if I ever need a body part.

My daily van, a 2002 Express will have 260K on it by weeks end.

I see no reason to replace it.

When I met my wife she had a brand new car.. I told her if she ever married me, that would be the last new car she owned. She married me anyways.
