VA AG Fears DC Law May Relocate Rat 'Families' to Virginia
CNS News ^ | Jan 13, 2012 | By Christopher Goins

(CNSNews.com) -- Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says he is worried that a new District of Columbia law that governs how pest control operators must handle rats may result in entire rodent “families” being relocated across the Potomac River into Virginia by D.C. pest control personnel.

Cuccinelli said D.C.'s new rat law--the Wildlife Protection Act of 2010 -- is “crazier than fiction” because it requires that rats and other vermin not be killed but captured, preferably in families; no glue or snap traps can be utilized; the rodents must be relocated from where they are captured; and some of these animals may need to be transferred to a “wildlife rehabilitator” as part of their relocation process.

“So we have real concerns about this ridiculous--ridiculous!--law and we’ve been pretty genial about dealing with D.C. on it,” said Cuccinelli. “But when you see an article like the ‘Rats Occupy Occupy DC,’ it points up the problem that we’re going to have in Virginia because of that--and because D.C’s really outrageous--outrageous!--treatment of these varmints who, for those who don’t remember their history, carried things like bubonic plague. I mean, these are true vermin.”

The states in which I hunt all have laws that say that no wild life can be imported into the state and that any game animal trapped, and I believe that includes any wild animal, can not be returned to the wild but must be destroyed.

Were I the attorney general of any state and any agency of any stripe deposited wild animals in my state, I would jail them.

And that goes for the crazies in the US Wildlife department as well.

I might lose in court but by the time they got out of jail they would decide it is not worth it.

If they are serious about removing varmints, they should start with the ones on Capital Hill.

. . . requires that rats [formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party? they're talking about them?] and other vermin not be killed but captured, preferably in families . . . .

I can't believe this is going on in America. Who's doing this?

You know, I’m really old and thought I had heard everything that could be crazy, but this takes the cake. Rats are serious disease carrying vermin and they aren’t going to kill them? If I were to see a rat, I’d assume there are more and I’d call an exterminator and kill those suckers.

Can’t kill rats? Their bubonic plague swiped out a great portion of the population of Europe. Granted, much of Washington needs to be wiped out, but they are going to transport them to somewhere else so they can kill those people?

Keep families of rats together? Sure, I’d do that and give them all the same poison so they could die together. Jeez.

In Washington state they classified moles as a fur bearing animal that can’t be trapped.

I thought it was Democrats being forced to move to Virginia to make it a “Blue” state.

Just as the environmental laws that forbid burning in wooded areas resulted in uncontrollable forest fires, environmental laws preventing the extermination of vermin may fuel multi-state pandemics.

People who remember the 14th St. Bridge "Ho Walk" (article here) will know that this isn't the first time DC's tried something like this.

I remember when they had a crack down on prostitutes in Times Square, and many of them relocated to Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, Queens. Thanks, Abe Beame.

ANd why doesn’t Virginia just make it a FELONY to Import any rodent into it’s jurisdiction? after all that would be the usual response if CITIZENS were doing something like this.
