Gingrich camp heads off ex-wife interview
Reuters ^ | January 18, 2012 | JoAnne Allen

The Gingrich campaign launched a preemptive strike as news spread that ABC plans to broadcast a potentially damaging interview with Newt Gingrich’s second ex-wife on Thursday – just two days before Saturday’s crucial South Carolina primary.

Gingrich’s daughters (from his first marriage) Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman came to their father’s defense in a letter released by his presidential campaign.

“The failure of a marriage is a terrible and emotional experience for everyone involved. Anyone who has had that experience understands it is a personal tragedy filled with regrets, and sometimes differing memories of events,” the daughters said in the letter addressed to ABC News Leadership.

“We will not say anything negative about our father’s ex-wife. He has said before, privately and publicly, that he regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves,” the letter said.

The daughters also said the former House Speaker intends to stay on message, suggesting one thing he will not be talking about in South Carolina is the ABC interview.

You watched the last debate.

Who can figure a fickle public?
Perry rocked. Newt has making hay on Perry dinging Mitt over the tax returns for days!
It’s what catapulted him to the top, but it was Perry who hit Mitt with it!

Nice try.

Newt clearly won the last debate. Period.

Surely you are following the news. Newt has been preaching the evils of private enterprise and capital. He was a lobbyist for the GSEs so he is what his record says he is.

Stop lying. The Gingrich aligned super-PAC was attacking corporate raiders like Bain, not free enterprise. Some of the things Bain did under Romney's watch were unethical at best. IF you want to defend that as "free enterprise", be my guest, but it's a losing argument.

Not necessarily Romney or his close backers. Newt made a lot of enemies while he was speaker. They hate the thought of his having the power of the President.

That’s interesting. It might have ticked her off that Newt spent so much money on Callista at Tiffany’s and probably never gave her so much as a cubic zirconia from QVC.

Can Callista’s hair stay that way for 4 years? It’s weird looking.

DUH, the interview is already in the can, so to speak, the debate at ABC, was when to release it. After it is released someone maybe in the toilet. So to speak.

I’m not.

Here’s why. Mitt Romney just needs South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa.

The end game is the following.

1, get your two horses in the race, Mitt and Newt from the beginning - mission accomplished.

Then you destroy the conservative challengers as they come up. Cain - destroyed. Bachmann is out. Now you’ve got to get rid of Perry and Santorum.

When Gingrich started polling ahead of Mitt Romney, that wasn’t in the plan. So Romney came out full bore to knock him down. Newt, also blew a tire with the VA mess.

What Romney, and everyone didn’t count on was Santorum. Santorum came out of nowhere and took Iowa. Romney takes NH, without much fuss.

Now, here’s the game. Romney wants to KO all the conservatives at South Carolina. He’s got a knockout blow saved up.

That’s why they’ve waited until now. They haven’t had to play it. Now, with only 3 days left until the election, it’s going to be on the news as much as they can run it and push Romney into first in South Carolina.

Nomination over.

Aren’t all the “sealed” accusations in a Republican politician’s
divorce sent directly to the DNC by the courts anyway...

..of course, they are....

I said 3% is good for Perry. 15% would be good for Santorum.

Combine them and you might have 3rd place locked down.

He led the charge on impeaching BJC while he himself was getting BJs from his mistress.

I would respectfully point out that the grounds for impeachment didn't inclue "getting BJs from his mistress," but rather, suborning perjury and perjury.

I agree he dominated the debate.

I would argue that Perry was 2nd in response from the crowd, and I don’t understand how he is discounted out of hand.

Santorum was also awesome 50% of the time.

Perry was on ALL night as was Newt.
