Perry’s support helps Gingrich - Endorsement perfectly timed
Washington Times ^ | January 19, 2012 | Ralph Z. Hallow

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Rick Perry’s withdrawal and perfectly timed endorsement of Newt Gingrich on Thursday probably will help the former House speaker pick up a percentage point or two in South Carolina’s Republican primary on Saturday, political analysts predict.

The Perry endorsement, coupled with the news that the final count in Iowa showed Mitt Romney actually lost the Jan. 3 caucuses to Rick Santorum, brightened what could have been a much tougher day on the campaign trail for Mr. Gingrich, who is again facing questions about his personal history of marital infidelity.

But the Texas governor’s carefully chosen words of support seemed to be aimed directly at those religious conservatives who have openly expressed concerns about the thrice-married Mr. Gingrich’s divorces and self-admitted “personal mistakes.”

“The fact is, there is forgiveness for those who seek God and I believe in the power of redemption, for it is a central tenet of my own Christian faith,” Mr. Perry said in an endorsement in which he clearly set out to bestow, as much as is possible, the GOP’s coveted Reagan mantle on Mr. Gingrich, calling him “a conservative visionary who can transform our country.”

Mr. Gingrich had been successful in receiving the forgiveness of many evangelical leaders - and not so successful with others threw their support to Mr. Santorum last weekend after a meeting in Texas.

Republicans of all stripes yesterday tended to agree that the visionary label could credibly apply only to Mr. Gingrich among the four remaining GOP presidential nomination seekers.

CW, you and several others were very supportive of Perry's bid for POTUS.

Although I too knew the man would have made a damn good President and effective at returning America to freedom and greatness, I am not sorry to have him back as Governor to keep up his good work for Texas.

Its the bravest that fall on the grenade to save the cause.

Thank you CW for your dedication in posting these pro-Perry articles - even in the face of many dispicable posters who made it their life’s mission to discourage you. You’ve set a fine example to us here - always positive.

God bless Gov. Perry and his family - they are patriots in every sense. Perry took one for the team - HE IS A GREAT AMERICAN. This steadfast loyalty to America is direly needed right now. I know he will continue to do everything he can to help make America strong again. God bless you too Cincinatus’ Wife!

I enjoyed sparring with you over Governor Perry early on, but I grew to admire him. I gotta say his withdrawal speech was a class act. It’s unfortunate he wasn’t able to smoothly articulate his ideas in the debates. It was almost painful to watch his verbal stumbles, and I reached the point where I hoped he’d do better. I’m starting to think we might have lost out on a good president.

“My gratitude to Gov. Rick Perry and Mrs. Anita Perry for fighting the good fight for freedom, and for understanding and believing in the exceptionalism that is America.”

Amen to that! May God richly bless them.

“And thank you to all you wonderful Rick Perry supporters who saw the promise of a Perry presidency.”

Not at all-—thanks to YOU, CW, and to ALL of you folks who posted articles and news about Rick Perry. Because of you all, I learned so much about him, and I became a supporter.
You didn’t let the anti-Perry vitriol deter you, you kept educating the folks about this good man and his record.

A Perry presidency would truly have been wonderful.

I have a hunch that Sarah was talking to her good friend, Governor Perry. Now if Perry can talk sense to Ron Paul (Pot). Paul must step down for the good of the country.

Thank you, you’re amazing. If I were to ever run for elective office I’d do my best to convince you to back me.

Rick and Anita Perry made a powerful contribution to the conversation of conservatism. They’re not done yet.

Any additional comment would be superfluous.

Kudos to your efforts on behalf of a decent man and a true Patriot.

Prayers for the Perry family and supporters. It was a courageous effort on behalf of ‘we the people’.

Thank you for your grace under pressure. We should all be so honorable.

Didn’t see it mentioned anywhere, but I think that one reason why Rick Perry “reassessed” to stay in his campaign was that he was still a principal in a VA lawsuit to allow him and, therefore, Gingrich to be on the ballot, which could help Newt in voting count.

If he had “suspended” his campaign, that alone could have been the grounds for dismissing the lawsuit.

Once the appellate court threw out the lawsuit, the sole remaining reason for Perry’s candidacy vanished, and he was never in it to be a spoiler.

Thank you, Governor, that was very classy!

I too wondered about the Virginia lawsuit angle of this as well. You might be right, and I agree, Perry was total class all the way, including how he ended it.
