U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

I wish her the best. This step should have been taken months ago, in the interest of not only her but also the people of her district.

She was being used by her Democrat “friends”, in my opinion, as a prop.

You're too kind. She began serving in Congress Jan, 2007. Congressional pension vesting takes five years... you do the math.

Best of luck to Rep. Giffords...I hope Ruth McClung makes a run for this Congressional seat.

Good grief. Its about time.

Just wondering how long the presidency would be left to the hands of a brain injured person before decicive action was taken?

Thinking about it, its may be some of the best democratic leadership the district has had in a while. Sometimes its hard to notice when folks stop screwing things up till they start up again or are replaced.

I know all you Freepers wouldn’t have minded if I would have coasted for the last year of my military career, just so I could get my pension. Thanks folks !

This may be a GOP pick up as Jesse Kelly, who lost to Giffords by a small margin in 2010, has declared again

You should have seen his facebook page after the shooting. It was bombarded with people declaring he was responsible because he ran negative ads against her in the election, others said it was because he held a fundraiser at a shooting range, and still another I saw was asking if he hired the perpetrator as a hit man on her because he had lost the election...

Because he held a fundraiser at a shooting range — that’s a good one.

A soldier injured in battle will not be allowed to gauge his own usefulness to the organization, nor will it be his choice in the circumstances or timing of his release from duty.

Best wishes in your recovery but, for this great country's sake, I hope you find a new line of work.

They weren’t supposed to have a chance - especially McClung. The DCCC had to sweep in and pour a bunch of cash to trash complete unknowns to save both of them in the closing days...McCain personally started running ads prior to that supporting Kelly and McClung (a surprise as he did not support them in their primaries, I don’t think, and they were the tea party backed candidates).

Many times the leaders will be allowed that luxury.

P.S. Kelly probably said something good about Sheriff Joe at some indeterminate time, so as a result (per the views expressed by the FaceBookies) we should just open the borders, throw away the Second Amendment, and go statist Aztlan-style.

He has already declared? Good news! He will win this time.

I’ll bet a large sum of money, not Romney large, that the Dems trot her out at the DNC convention to get some sympathy votes. Pathetic, but it will happen.

She was enough of a ‘blue dog’ that the Dems also targeted her seat.

They don’t mention the target graphic that they used, however. Just the one that Palin used.

I have to agree with you. Especially the second part. However, Gabrielle Gifford was shot by a nut, not by a Conservative.

I live in AZ and was dreading the thought of Giffords running again..that said, her liberal husband is probably going to try to replace her, using the Tucson shooting. Hope I’m wrong.

Right. She'll kick off, in a mercifully short speech, the theme of the evening: Left-wing rage at God and "The Man" Civility.

I never thought of that (the pension). I thought that she should have resigned long before this, and you’re right, the pension is probably the reason she didn’t.

That said, I think we need a better way for dealing with incapacitated congresscritters. Letting the seat be held by somebody who is not capable of doing the job is not fair to the people who elected that person.
