Everything in that post (except the headline) I totally agree with and have made the same points in the past. Egypt is broke. 30% unemployment (and that isn’t the real number, because it doesn’t count women who are forbidden to work by their husbands or fathers etc). They have 3 main legitimate industries all of them small - tourism, oil/gas, agriculture. None of these can sustain the population. It’s not like suddenly Egypt is going to become a great industrial power, or a great textile exporter, or a great country rich in natural resources nobody yet found. The people of Egypt are truly in trouble and the Islamists cannot, will not change that situation.

However, what the expert seems to miss is that at times like these when the people are angry and desperate, the leaders will activate the 4th main industry that every country has - military. If 1 million people protest the Islamists in Tahrir square one of two things will happen, either the Islamists will kill their own people and there will be civil war, or the Islamists will say “we are poor and the jews are rich, they are Satan, lets go kill them” and there will be international war.

The guy may be an expert in Egypt, but he is no expert on how people react towards the Jews when they are in desperate straits and he is apparently no expert in Bolshevism or Islamic revolution. War - civil or other - is a likely outcome. $5 billion a year from the US won’t change that. Maybe $50 billion a year would give them money to feel better and perhaps start some kind of nation building but we aren’t going to give them that and we shouldn’t. War may be the right solution for them - to thin the population and teach the next generation to reform their country.

Clearly so. Aside from that, whenever an “expert” reassures you that everything is either donkey-horey or about to fall apart yesterday, believe the opposite and prepare for it.
