(PressTV, Iran) U.S. sends 12,000 troops in Libya

The United States has sent some 12,000 soldiers to Libya, in the first phase of deployments to the oil-rich North African nation.

According to Asharq Alawsat, the troops landed in the eastern oil port city of Brega.

Although the deployment is said to be aimed at generating stability and security in the region, the troops are expected to take control of the country's key oil fields and strategic ports.

Brega, the site of an important oil refinery, serves as a major export hub for Libyan oil. The town is also one of the five oil terminals in the eastern half of the country.

Following the popular uprising of the Libyan people, NATO launched a major air campaign against the forces of the former regime on March 19, 2011 under a UN mandate to “protect the Libyan population.”

The Western military alliance, however, was heavily criticized for its failure to protect civilians and taking action beyond the terms of the UN mandate.

On October 20, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed in his hometown of Sirte, eight months into an uprising that put an end to his 42-year dictatorship.

Human rights groups have accused NATO of committing war crimes and human rights violations against Libyans.

Ain’t it the truth and ain’t it a shame?

Don’t know what the truth is.

You gotta be kidding me. Is this for real?

I am hoping someone will verify that it's not real.

There is no spin because this story is fabricated. There's no news on the DoD or State Department websites.

WARNING!!!!

PressTV (recently banned in Britain - but not, apparently, on FR) is the propaganda outlet for the Iranian Regime...

It is on WND, also.

Not necessarily true, we were bombing Libya for two days before the news was actually reported.

But, I find this story dubious for now.

It also is not on the BBC or Radio France Internationale websites, nor on the Voice of America website. It is not on Libération, nor La Stampa, not the Guardian in the U.K.

Enemy sources have been known to lie.

Nation building in Libya, what could possibly go wrong?

Hope this news account is incorrect and considering the source it most likely is.

I hope you are right. You know we have troops in Africa, forget which country, on a peace keeping mission and I am not comfortable with that, either.

Thanks for your true, and accurate statement about PressTV. It is the propaganda arm of the Iranian Government.

Personally think articles from PressTV should be banned from posting at Free Republic as it is most often disinformation.

There is no way this article can be believed period.

I think the story is bogus, it takes a lot of ships to move 12,000 troops and their equipment. There would definitely be more noise if a US flotilla of the size needed were operating in the Med.

The US has a few hundred troops in Djibouti.

Contrary to popular belief, only 6 or 7 countries host more than a couple thousand US troops. Most overseas contingents are just a few hundred doing technical work or guarding embassies, etc.
