PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 19, 2012) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it plans to perform water sampling at approximately 60 homes in the Carter Road/Meshoppen Creek Road area of Dimock, Pa. to further assess whether any residents are being exposed to hazardous substances that cause health concerns. EPAs decision to conduct sampling is based on EPAs review of data provided by residents, Cabot Oil and Gas, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
EPA is working diligently to understand the situation in Dimock and address residents concerns, said EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. We believe that the information provided to us by the residents deserves further review, and conducting our own sampling will help us fill information gaps. Our actions will be based on the science and the law and we will work to help get a more complete picture of water quality for these homes in Dimock.
The sampling will begin in a matter of days and the agency estimates that it will take at least three weeks to sample all the homes. All sampling is contingent on access granted to the property. EPA expects validated results from quality-tested lab to be available in about five weeks after samples are taken.
In addition, EPA is taking action to ensure delivery of temporary water supplies to four homes where data reviewed by EPA indicates that residents well water contains levels of contaminants that pose a health concern. EPA will reevaluate this decision when it completes sampling of the wells at these four homes. Current information on other wells does not support the need for alternative water at this time. However, the information does support the need for further sampling.
Natural gas plays a key role in our nations clean energy future and the Obama Administration is committed to ensuring that the development of this vital resource occurs safely and responsibly. At the direction of Congress, and separate from this limited sampling, EPA has begun a national study on the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources.
No way would I bet against you.
I’m sure these EPA scientists will be objective, unbiased, and trustworthy. Just like the Weather Scientists on the federal payroll.
Next step: close down fracking all over the country until further study.
I’m still looking for anywhere in our Constitution that says the federal government has any business coming into any home to check on anything. Nor can I find the letters EPA anywhere in the Constitution. It’s amazing what the sheeple of this country will let the feds do to and in our homes.
I should think they’d need some kind of warrant to enter anybody’s home.
And they took tests already and said no problem.
This is the EPA being "creative".
Fracking has been going on for IIRC about 40 years.
And why is it a federal problem and not the PA EPA's business to check water? When will this federal nuisance crap end? Incredible!
Folks should be very careful with this sort of thing.
Napoleon Michigan put in water lines a while ago due to contamination from a pipeline leak many years ago. Now a few families are being sued because they refuse to destroy their existing wells. Capping the wells isn’t enough, they want them rendered forever unusable.
Tomorrow’s headline? “People evicted from 60 homes due to unsafe drinking water.”
I’d tell the EPA to jump down one of the local wells.
“And why is it a federal problem and not the PA EPA’s business to check water? “
Because the ruling cabal wants to insure more havoc on the economy by killing an oil/gas boom that is generating jobs?
Got a letter asking permission from a gas exploration company asking to test well water. I think they want to get out ahead of any of this ‘after testing’.
ps. I’ve never heard of Dimock.
That’s exactly what they are doing for their own protection. Don’t blame them one bit.
Cabot will have to pay a gubbermint fine, pay settlements to all the little injured parties whose water is "Poisoned;" the Green weenies will get good publicity about the eeeevil corporations poisoning Mother Gaia, and everybody's happy.
