Bruins goalie skips White House ceremony honoring team in protest (Devoted Tea Partier)

I assumed at first that he was doing this because, in the eternal “Obama: incompetent or evil?” debate, he had come down on the side of the latter. But no. This doesn’t appear to be an anti-Hopenchange thing specifically.

Tim Thomas posted the following statement on his Facebook page regarding his decision to not attend a ceremony at the White House to honor the Bruins for their Stanley Cup win last June:

“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT”

Meanwhile, at the White House:

During his speech, President Obama spoke glowingly about Thomas and his performance.

“This Stanley Cup was won by defense as much as by offense,” Obama said. “Tim Thomas posted two shutouts in the Stanley Cup Finals and set an all-time record for saves in the postseason and he also earned the honor being only the second American ever to be recognized as the Stanley Cup playoff’s MVP.”

Thomas is a devoted tea partier, to the point where he wears the Gadsden flag motto on his mask. Anyone know if he’s endorsed a candidate for president? I searched online but couldn’t find anything, although “not Romney” seems a safe bet.

Bos. Herald
A native of Flint, Mich., Thomas wears a helmet adorned with the patriotic slogan “Don’t
Tread on Me” and is a fan of conservative pundit Glenn
Beck, formerly of Fox News.
The puck-stopper’s high-profile snub went viral as “Tim Thomas” became a trending topic on Twitter and Democrats hammered him, including lefty pundit Keith Olbermann, who fired off a tweet calling the goalie a “fool.”

Massachusetts Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck told the Herald: “I think anyone who really cares about the lives, liberty and happiness of the American people wouldn’t miss an opportunity to shake the hand of the man who got bin Laden.”

Last year, retired Chicago Bears Hall of Fame lineman Dan Hampton said he was “not a fan of the guy in the White House” when he skipped a ceremony honoring the 25th anniversary of the Bears’ 1986 Super Bowl title. In 1996, former Green Bay Packers and Boston College tight end Mark Chmura, a Republican, skipped a meet-and-greet with President Clinton on moral grounds, citing the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

The same folks who defended the Dixie Chicks comments about W (admittedly made on foreign soil) have a problem with this.

Imagine in future:
(athlete) of the Stanley Cup winner refuses to meet up with Pres. Gingrich/Romney/Santorum/Paul etc
Wouldn’t they say, right on?

Nice job! His first, off-the cuff, comments when declining the invite was “Nah - I’ve seen enough hockey pucks for awhile.”

To “shake the hand of the man who got Bin Laden” would likely involve a trip to an American cemetery, as that man and many of his brothers are likely themselves dead, thanks to the Dumb Bastard and his sidekick’s gloating and victory lap after Bin Laden’s death...Mr Democrat spokeshole...
