To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.

Limited times..now means whatever they decide it means. It possibly could have been a lifetime plus seventy years, but the SCOTUS has been relatively consistent - it means whatever congress decides it means, and that the limitation is purely self imposed, and may be changed in any manner or form retroactively - unless it's to reduce it, because that wouldn't be fair.
