Anti-Semitism still haunts Germany
BBC News ^ | 01/26/12 | Stephen Evans

What on Earth does the Jewish community in Germany make of the flurry of headlines this week that described substantial anti-Semitism, and how have they reacted to plans to publish extracts from Mein Kampf?

Here, they live in the land that produced the Holocaust, and a rigorous academic study indicates that one in five Germans has at least a "latent" antipathy towards Jews.

Separately, a British publisher planned to put extracts from Hitler's manifesto on news stands and only held back as a court in Bavaria got involved.

You would expect loud and righteous outrage - but you would be wrong. Certainly, some groups have voiced anger but they have often been outside Germany.

In the country itself there is a more measured tone. Behind the headlines there are nuances and complexities.

I think it really haunts all of Europe, or at least much of Europe. It’s not exclusive to Germany, anyway.

Which is probably why the Muzzies have made the inroads that they have.

Technically, Arabs are “Semitics” too.

So “anti-Semitic” COULD be applied to Arabic Muslims as well as the Jewish people.

In practice, though, not the way things work out. Islam is capturing the hearts and minds of young Northern European males and females both, which makes its inroads all the more treacherous.

Much of Europe has become “post-Christian”, with falling attendance of the existing Christian churches, and general lack of interest by even the long-term members. In this atmosphere, a strongly proselitizing movement like Islam finds many converts, especially if they appeal to normal rebellious impulses.

The enemy is within the gates.

It seems to get worse the further you get from the Atlantic coast.

I love to visit Eastern Europe, but my Lord, they really are anti-Jewish.

I was going to post anti-semitic in my previous response, but you are correct. They are more out and out anti Jewish, so I changed the wording.

Reading the book: "Bonhoeffer" by Eric Metaxas - amazing to see the rise of anti-semetism in 1920's Germany and how Hitler snookered the German people (who didn't take much arm-twisting) into buying his whole agenda.
Then one thinks - that can never happen again....

I forget who said “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it plays the same themes over and over again.”

My Father in Law was in WW2. He is Italian. And he is seeing signs that it is happening all over again. It is a while off - maybe 15 years - but it is worrying.

I lived in Germany for four years while in the USAF (1993-1997). I lived in a small village and was very friendly with all my neighbors and did all kinds of stuff with them. I knew them all well, drank prodigious amounts of alcohol with them, my wife and I ate almost every night in someone’s house or we had folks over as guests...

It is true. I used to argue this with them all the time, but in a friendly way. It's not that it's bred into them... I don't know... It's more like Archie Bunker's rationale. You know, get a Jew lawyer, Jews are stingy, Jews will rip you of, etc, etc. Just broad stereotypes rather than particulars.

Towards the end of my tour my house was purchased by a new landlord. He gave us a bit of trouble, tried to raise the rent but we had a contract. Had to go to Military Housing where they sent us to a German lawyer to write him a “cease and desist” letter. He was from the nearby big city and the neighbors didn't like him at all. My neighbor's told me he had a “Jew name”. I always thought German Jewish names had plants and jewels, precious metals etc, in them. Never did figure it out, as the landlord didn't have a name like this at all.

I joked back with her, “How is that a Jewish name?”

“It just is,” she said.

“How?” said I. There's no steins or blums or baums or geld or silber or any of those things in it?”

“Well it is,” she said. “We just know these things.”

I too have traveled extensively in Europe and being a first generation Greek-American have had many of those late night/early morning “vigorous discussion with them. And, regrettably I must agree with you about Anti-Semitism in Europe. It's my observation that it's alive and well for sure. One key indicator for me was the staunch support for the Palestine movement over Israeli interests. Anyway, it's there and apparently not going away anytime soon.

It’s never good to outlaw speech and it has been a disaster to cram down on anti-Jewish sentiment in Europe and especially, Germany. It’s like capping a pressure cooker. It gives the impression Jews are lording over the freedom of natives.

Worse, the speech control only applies to native Europeans (oppressors) - not Muslims (Politically Correct total victims of Jews) who are free to carry on their advocacy of another genocide. Muslims are the living spirit and mouth of Hitler and it is illegal hate to tell Muslim bigots to blow off.

Liberal societies in the US and Europe are twisted sisters of multiculturalism. They nurture and protect hate, while they claim to hate hate. Most people are not fooled by these menancing elitists.

Actually, I didn't see what you are saying. What I saw was it was acceptable to talk about Jews as money-grubbing, extra-intelligent cheapskates, at least privately. Publicly they wouldn't do so. But honestly, I did not see any campaign to force them not to talk about Jews.

Now publicly, Europeans condemn Israel, loudly and incessantly, and this has become the public anti-semetic face of Leftists in Europe.

Criticize Islam publicly or privately? NO! Verboten! You WILL go to jail.

One in five [of any group] has at least a "latent" antipathy towards [other group]. My best guess.

BS-

Antisemitism has its roots all the way back to the inquisition and middle ages. It's only Germany's more recent past that pushes her into the spotlight, while in reality Europe as a whole has an antisemitic undertone. Germany is no more or less antisemitic than say Great Briton herself where you'll also hear the conspiracy theories and Jewish jokes... If anything, because of Germany's past, the security apparatus and political class is hyper sensitive to the issue and tends to be heavy handed (By German standards) in response.
