W.Va. passes tax break for crackers

Crap, I have to say something nice about the West Virginia Legislature. It ain’t easy being a curmudgeon when public officials do the right thing. But last night the state Senate passed a big tax break for construction of a cracker — a billion-dollar machine that takes natural gas and converts it into a cheap feedstock for plastic. This will mean thousands of jobs, including more than 1,000 six-figure jobs in one of the nation’s poorest states.

Plus, the feedstock produced is cheaper than oil-based feedstocks, which will reduce the nation’s dependency on Middle East oil. people overlook the fact that gasoline is less than 45% of the oil we use.

So now Democratic Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and Commerce Secretary Keith Burdette are headed to Houston to make their pitch, again, to Shell and the rest to build one or two (three?) crackers in West Virginia.

“I think we will be successful in recruiting more than one,” Keith Burdette told the Parkersburg News and Sentinel.

I have followed his career throughout my 30 years in West Virginia. He is a straight shooter. So this is pretty happy news.

We already have one cracker planned for completion in 2016. Burdette is talking about one or two more. The competition is Ohio and Pennsylvania, which have Republican governors.

Oh and yes, the tax on saltine crackers is going down. It had been 6% but in recent years the state’s food tax has dropped — it is now 2%. I say scrap the danged thing because it is now a nuisance to collect.

Is this a Catalytic Cracker? Like the one that used to be at the Sohio refinery in the Cleveland Flats? I could see that from our house in Independence!

I don't know, West Virginia, tax break for crackers, there is a joke in there somewhere; but since I am a person of high class, I will not participate in the funnin' of my redneck, gun toten' Bible thumpin' brothern {especially since I spend a lot of time hunting down there with my cousins and one of them might line me up}.
