French ELLE Article's Racist Remarks Spark Boycott (Blacks didn't know fashion until Obama)

If a fashion writer for French Elle is to be believed—and she is not—African-Americans weren't stylish until the Obama family came into office.

"For the first time, the chic has become a plausible option for a community so far pegged [only] to its street wear codes," writes Nathalie Dolivo in a post translated from the magazine's website titled 'Black Fashion Power.'

And if this sweeping stereotyping and flat-out ignorance weren't already off base, Dolivo goes on to explain why the so-called Obama renaissance of style is so "chic." According to her assessment, it embraces "white codes" while still making what she calls "a bourgeois ethnic reference (a batik-printed turban/robe, a shell necklace, a 'créole de rappeur') reminiscent [of] the roots."

If blacks think Michelle is fashionable they still don’t know squat about fashion. LMAO

Of course whoever thinks black women do not know anything about fashion doesn’t know much about blacks.

I am pretty long in the tooth, but I remember back years ago when people actually dressed up for Church, it was the upper class black ladies who came in with the newest hats and the newest fashions.

Today there really is little fashion. Mostly fads and fluff, and who can show the most meat..

Amazingly stupid opinion! When I was a kid, the stereotype of blacks was that they were sharp dressers. And they are!

I remember flamboyant, colorful, pimp like, thrown in there most often.

Well I suppose Moochelle and Bambi certainly set an example of what fashion and class is not. Do not mimic these two losers.

That’s a 1970s stereotype. I go back to the time (the late 50s) when whites would laugh at blacks because they owned Cadillacs but not houses. We didn’t understand that they were often discriminated against in housing and so they took pride in the ownership of cars. They were incredibly sharp dressers, too, as I said.

Also, the black church ladies and their escorts are often incredibly well-dressed and elegant. That’s why this article is the pits.

The Nicholas Brothers! Nat King Cole! Lady Day! Even Ella was always turned out in a beautiful gown. (And let’s not forget a certain Motown group of ladies who appeared on the Ed Sullivan show!)

As the picture of the first lady shows, gaudy and colorful is not necessarily “sharp”. Your explanation for why blacks drove the cars they did (and do) doesn’t jive with my memories either.

There are blacks who dress sharp, and there always has been, but your stereotype is wrong, or at least too broad.

This piece in Elle strikes me as an attempt by French elitists hoping to compliment Moochelle and elevate her clothing sense (which is terrible) but it backfired horribly.

Good.

If black women dressed half as bad as Michelle does they’d be a laughing stock. So far I have not observed that. Smart women!

I was told the same thing about loan discrimination when I
made a dumb remark about a Packard (that dates me!) in front
of a very small modest house. The person who set me straight
was a friend of my father, and the owner of a local bank.

Fashion? If curtains with an oddly placed bat are what we call fashion, I'm proud to be unfashionable.
