Unsold goods weigh on future economic growth (Finally some truth from MSNBC)
MSNBC ^ | 1/27/2012 | John W. Schoen

The U.S. economy perked up late last year as hiring accelerated and factories ramped up production. Unfortunately, a lot of what those factories made is still sitting in warehouses and on store shelves.

That doesn’t bode well for growth in the coming months.

At first blush, the numbers posted by the Commerce Department for gross domestic product in the last three months of 2011 looked strong. Overall growth advanced by 2.8 percent on an annual basis, a little weaker than economists had expected based on a series of other positive economic reports. That was much better than the 1.8 percent pace in the third quarter and the best showing since the second quarter of 2010.

But much of the fourth quarter growth came from businesses restocking inventories, which swelled by $56.0 billion, adding nearly 2 percentage points to GDP growth. The so-called ”final sales” number, which tracks how much was actually sold, rose a meager 0.8 percent.

Sounds like some manufacturers bought into the ‘happy times are here again’ hype....and reality is going to hit them hard.

Honest reporting on the economy would be much more helpful.

"Honest reporting on the economy would be much more helpful. "

The truth cannot be found in the anyone's numbers, especially the government numbers.

The CBS news just told the nation that the economy is back. Happy days are here again thanks to Obama.

Why should ANYONE believe what the news media, polling data, or “production numbers” say? They are all in the tank for this administration and the lies, the falsehoods, the skewing of the economic numbers are ALL in plain sight. All you have to do is look around: at your office buildings (how many have tons of sq ft for rent), neighborhoods (at empty houses or rental signs), shopping centers (empty spaces over the past 4 years). Pictures are worth 1,000 LIES(er, ah, words) HOPE the Republican candidate shows lots of photos of these such SIGNS that our economy is BEGGING for CHANGE that OBAMA REFUSES to PROVIDE!

I need to alter that last sentence: WE don’t want ANY gov’t or President to “provide” the economics by shoving programs, etc down our throats. JUST roll back the REGULATIONS of OBUMMER, allow DRILLING, ALLOW FREE ENTERPRISE, and COMPLETELY REPEAL OBAMACARE!

That’s what I Like about Newt: he’s out there saying get me a Conservative Majority in the Senate and increase our majority in the House and I’ll ask them to have those sign bills on my desk on Jan 20, 2013 to SIGN!

“Some” truth, but, also a lot of Obama-supporting BS and no blame placed where it belongs for it all.

Anyone would be absolutely foolish to believe the statistics coming out of the US government these days. GDP stats are always "revised" usually downward. Unemployment is a guess, at best.

I remember reading, many moons ago, that economists were still arguing about the real cause of the great depression. Some thought it was an "inventory depression".
