Thousands converge on capitol for anti-abortion rally (video at link)

AUSTIN -- Crowds carried hundreds of signs in protest of abortion as they marched up Congress Avenue. For decades the Texas Rally for Life has brought people from all across the state to the steps of the capitol.

The Texas Rally for Life brought close to 3,000 people marching through downtown Austin Saturday afternoon.

Crowds listened as anti-abortion leaders urged them to spread their message to everyone.

Keynote speaker Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott explained how he learned the beauty of life when he lost the ability to walk.

Those who took part said the polarizing issue of abortion should not be approached with hate, but with love.

"Being Pro-Life is just such a blessing and seeing how much love we have for everyone -- even after they have an abortion," Elise Bockover said. "We're still here for them, and I want people to know that -- we're here for them always."

The date of this year's rally added significance to everyone. Late January marked the anniversary of Roe V. Wade, the landmark decision legalizing abortion in 1973.

This is very positive coverage of our Texas Rally for Life!

There's video of Greg Abbott speaking at the link and lots of warm, loving support for those lives, mom and baby, threatened by abortion.

Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst also spoke, along with Joe Pojman, PhD, of Texas Alliance for Life, and Carol Everett, a long-time supporter of pregnancy assistance services.

It was a beautiful day to go to the Capitol. I took my 11 year old granddaughter and we handed out info on the new "Choose Life" license plates that are available in Texas.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I'm on the board of Texas Alliance for Life and my local "Options for Women" pregnancy assistance center.)

Early in the day some of us were privileged to hear from a young man in Governor Perry's office about the efforts to follow through on the prohibition of contracts with abortionists, about the new sonogram bill, and the new license plate.

My "Choose Life" plate (LF * MD) is on it's way. Texans can order on line through a link at Texas Alliance for Life at http://www.texasallianceforlife.org./ChooseLife.aspx The plates cost $30 extra a year, but $22 will go to support adoption services.

At least we got some local coverage.

There wasn’t much for last week’s National Rally in DC, was there?

I forgot! Senator John Cornyn also spoke at the Rally!

Here’s more news coverage - not quite as friendly - from the San Antonio Express News:

Hi hocndoc!

It was reported Friday that not one national news outlet covered the D.C. March for Life (except one that showed some protesters carrying Pro-Choice signs).

Thank you for the Austin report and for your good work.

Thanks! The Austin press is wide enough - and the San Antonio audience is Catholic enough - that we get some coverage down here.

Good!!!

There was a man that spoke yesterday at the Florida Awake!
Presidential Candidate Forum (they were waiting for Newt to arrive). I think the number he quoted was 11% of Hispanic women end their pregnancies with abortion and he gave information about how with a stroke of a pen Obama has made abortion an American export.

I notice they call it an Anti-Abortion Rally instead of a Pro-Life Rally.

Considering it's Austin, I guess we should be grateful that they mentioned it at all.

Here's the report from THE STATESMAN
