Kansas ag secretary asks DHS to legitimize illegal immigrant farm labor

Faced with a shortage of hired hands, Kansas ranchers and farmers are appealing to their state’s secretary of agriculture for a solution. And he says he has one: hiring illegal immigrants.

It’s an idea that’s unorthodox enough to turn heads but practical enough to justify a series of meetings with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security — a meeting which Kansas Agriculture Secretary Dale Rodman told the Topeka Capital-Journal he has attended.

His goal is for the state government to organize a network of illegal immigrants and willing employers into a hiring network. No such arrangement, of course, can go forward without the federal government’s approval, since Washington, D.C. is tasked with enforcing immigration laws.

“I need a waiver,” Rodman said. “It would be good for Kansas agriculture.”

As talks continue off-and-on in Washington, D.C., state lawmakers....

Republican state Rep. Larry Powell, who chairs the Kansas House Agriculture Committee, said throwing out the mostly Hispanic illegal aliens would cripple farmers.

“Most have been there more than 10 years,” Powell told the Capital-Journal. “It would be devastating to the Kansas economy to send them all home.”

With Republicans like this, who needs Democrats. What part of "illegal" does he not understand? We're trying to make headway against the illegal's flooding our country and he's protecting cheap labor.

How about if I appeal for an approval to hire bank robbers; I could use a few extra bucks, too.....

What part of "law-breaker approval" do Kansas Committee Members not understand?

The governor of Kansas is Sam Brownback (R). If he tolerates this action, his judgment needs to be questioned.

Each expression of political vice, government dependency, excess spending and debt, twisting of the rule of law, class war demagoguery, rots the foundation of society and adds a layer of risk.

Is the Ag Secretary position an appointed one? If so, the Governor should remove him for promoting illegal activity.

If it were up to farmers, slavery would return.

Get rid of Illegals period!

Make able bodied welfare recipients work to earn their welfare money.

What’s wrong with that? After all, they steal more from us than the illegals do in the name of welfare.

What is wrong with the H-2A Visa program? It is already in place and working. At least for the law abiding who use it. This a$$ just wants amnesty.

Currently we have 14 different federal migrant worker programs on the books. Farmers just wish to skip the compliance parts of these programs, such as providing housing and health care. Better for the bottom line if you pay for it.

Nobody will suggest that we replace illegal immigrant workers with citizens receiving gov’t assistance.

I'll answer your bank robber appeal with a quote from the Republican Chair of the Agriculture Committee:

“Most have been there more than 10 years,” Powell told the Capital-Journal. “It would be devastating to the Kansas economy to send them all home.”

So since some of your bank robbers may have been here for more than 10 years I assume you could count on his support!

That just shows how lame his argument really is.

A little background. Brownback is a ‘compassionate’ conservative.

As a senator from Kansas, Brownback was a supporter of George Bush's Shamnesty push.

There’s plenty who ‘owe a debt to society’ simply watching tv in our jails.. at 35k/year. I don’t think it would be that hard to figure out how to put them to work and inmates from all over the country could rotate through these programs. After three or four seasons of work, they get to start working down their sentence.

Not allowing labor costs to rise stifles innovation in process and capital (machinery).

Are these ‘farmers’ the old fashioned family farms, or are they the corporate conglomerates that seem to dominate farming in many parts of America.

True, it's the ultimate cheap labor.

Politician helps protect cheap labor -> Farmers make more profits -> Farmers donate to politician -> Politician gets re-elected -> Politician keeps protecting cheap labor = America gets screwed but gets cheap wheat. Great, just great.

Industrial farming is a mess, from the mega crap factories called CAFOs to the large packers (if you wish to see Somalies go to Lexington, NE). CAFOs have the footprint of a small city but since they are “Green Acres” they can basically just spray raw crap out of a sprinkler system onto the ground. Next the government will increase in size to regulate this and the merry go round of ripping off the citizens keeps on keeping on.

Make people work for their government checks? Outrageous! They're too busy using their new iPhones and iPad2's to work for a living.

Wha-huh?? Is there any aspect of this country that DHS does NOT have its tentacles in?
