LAS CRUCES — A jailed New Mexico gun store owner accused of selling weapons that made it into the hands of Mexican cartels says he is on a hunger strike.

Ian Garland wrote in a letter to the Las Cruces Sun-News that he won’t eat until he is allowed visits from his lawyers and the media.

“I have been in a 6-by-12 room for 316 days in maximum security for making legal and lawful sales to people who have lied to me, they even admitted they lied, so why am I here?” he wrote.

Over a 15-month period ending last March, Garland made multiple gun sales to local officials including the Columbus (NM) police chief, mayor and village trustee. He claims that they passed background checks and the sales were legal. The guns were subsequently sent to Mexico where they were used in crimes committed by drug cartels including kidnapping and murder.

Garland plead guilty in July to federal charges of conspiracy and making false statements in the acquisition of firearms. Last month he tried to withdraw his plea and request a jury trial but a U.S. District Court judge denied the request. When sentenced, the 51-year old naturalized citizen from Australia faces up to 35 years in federal prison.

His problem was he wasn’t the US Attorney General.

You need to understand the law. For example, it’s bad to cheat on your taxes unless you’re the head of the Treasury Department.

See how it worke?

It’s sort of like signing insider trading laws to save “the consumer from fraud” then profiting from it.

It’s supporting a huge government bureaucracy to Socialize medicine you will never be a part of.

It’s not reforming Social Security, raising the age, eligibility, etc. when your pension plan is publically-funded and separate from your constituents.

It’s not allowing soldiers in the field to vote, because the mainly vote Republican and cry about timeframes, but endorsing ACORN, and pushing for illegals, felons and dead people to vote with no ID.

I get it, you are a crooked Liberal Democrat.

Let me guess, the government had people buy the guns legally and send them to caretls?

He hasn’t been allowed to see his lawyer? Doesn’t that Constitution thing come into this somewhere?

That was back when we were under the Constition. Then on November 4, 2008 the voters went to the polls and voted. A majority of those that voted said, via their votes,we don’t need or want a damned Constitution! We want a messiah that will lead us to the promised land where we will get free money, free healthcare, free housing, free education, free money, free gas, free electricity. We will not have to work. We can layup, fornicate, hang out, and protest. So here we are.

I think Las Cruces is where they jailed a guy for saying he was a Navy SEAL. They said he was crazy and won’t let him see a dentist so he pulled his own tooth.

Garland plead guilty in July to federal charges of conspiracy and making false statements in the acquisition of firearms.

Why did he do that if the sales were legal?

If you asked me, he is nothing more then political prisoner. The Federal Goverment has no right to restrict this mans right to keep & bare arms. That must implicitly include the free sales of arms.

Reason he gave for originally pleading guilty:

In his request to withdraw his plea, Garland said he felt “he was pressured into lying to himself and pleading guilty” to the count.

He also said that “the pressure and potential consequences of not pleading were too much and this forced him to plea(d) to Count 1, the conspiracy, when he otherwise did not believe in (his) heart that he was guilty.”

In a separate letter dated Jan. 3, Garland wrote that he had “no idea” the Columbus police chief, mayor and village trustee were doing anything illegal.

“I made legal and lawful sales to people who lied to me,” he wrote. “What was I to think when they drove to my business in uniform, in a police car, city cars, bring the mayor, police chief? I was telling everyone how happy I was, they did the paperwork, passed the FBI background check, why would I not trust them?”

That's why they won't let the media talk to him. All of those speshul people are cutting plea deals. He's the fall guy.

What does this have to do with Fast and Furious? Anything? Everyone here seems to assume so. It’s not clear here that this is not another bad guy. The ATF told him to sell more to these people?

Really? It doesn’t make any sense.

Here’s more background. WTH was going on here? Is this part of F&F or is this what has been going on down there that hillary wanted to exploit?

No, I don’t think this had any connection to F&F or any op of the ATF. This was a little gun running syndicate run by the officials of a very small border town.
