Romney's Cheap and Empty Win
The American Spectator ^ | February 1, 2012 | George Neumayr

Posted on 02/01/2012 4:32:22 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Mitt Romney's plastic and philosophically vapid campaign secured an easy victory in Florida on Tuesday night. Sunshine state GOP voters swallowed his "electability" argument whole, according to the exit polls.

It appears that country club Republicans have succeeded again in duping the GOP electorate into crowning a "centrist" Republican. Never mind that "centrist" Republicans rarely win the center. They usually lose the center while sapping the spirit of the party's conservative base.

Out of Bob Dole's and John McCain's tattered Big Tent steps another "reformed" RINO, Mitt Romney, who will receive, should he win the nomination, a similar thumping from the Democrats.

But let's say that he is "electable," for the sake of argument. Who cares? The purpose of politics in a republic is not simply to win but to win on sound principles. A party that pursues victory by scrapping or sidelining its platform will have no truth left with which to govern once it does.

If "electability" is the goal, why don't the politically correct plutocrats of the GOP just call for a one-party state? That way they could win every time.

The "electability" argument is bankrupt on both philosophical and practical grounds. It destroys the party's soul and guarantees defeat.

Even though Romney paid for this Florida win on his debit card -- outspending Newt by millions -- he still couldn't nail down the rank-and-file vote. Seven out of ten self-described conservatives didn't vote for him. This foreshadows the boredom and disgust that will keep conservatives home in the fall.

How many of us who held our noses and voted for Dole, Bush 41/Bush 43 are finally reaching our own “tipping point?” Eyes have been opened; and are still opening. For once, this election has exposed the power behind the GOP is not our friend; nor are their propaganda outlets (Rush, Beck, Fox News, Drudge, Coulter ...the list goes on and on.)

Hey, I'm with ya. But tipping point for what? To jump out of the nauseous roller coaster to certain death otherwise?

I'd just like to remind you, beating on the only friends conservatism has in the media above....where did Bush41 come from?

Ronaldus Friggin Magnus Hizzownself.

Reagan co-opted the Blueblood RINOs and gave us the biggest "read my lips and hold your nose" RINO in our times.

They're inside the gates and they're willing to shoot at Santa Anna. Should we line them up against the wall before Obama does it to all of us at once? Or do we co-opt them to take out Obama/Hillary/Sebelius/Napolitano/Holder in 2012, and then deal with them after this battle is won?

It won’t matter that Romney won’t attract enough of The Cocktail Party’s beloved “centrists” and “independents” to get him elected, Tea Partiers will still get the blame.

The leaders of the GOP wanted, for many years, a big part of what is called Obamacare. Despite his indignation about mandates on the stump, even Rick Santorum supported them in 1994, when he first ran for US Senate. Obamacare would have been considered a “reasonable compromise” back in the 90s, and it would have ended up passing by a bipartisan majority and to great acclaim from the punditocracy. The outrage exhibited by the GOP during the Obamacare debate was mostly for show. The true conservatives opposed it, of course, but not the libs/moderates that constitute the majority of the party.

Yes, they do see themselves as distinct from and above the sheeple.

Sarah took money from people like you or me. In doing so, that was money that may have snuffed out the hopes of a good farm team candidate.

Fine...I understand what you are saying....now back it up. What are the details? And I don't take “Google it” as evidence to back up your claims....you are the one making the charges (none of which I have heard) now back them up. I will look at them with an open mind....

Hey, I'm a nice guy. I'll give you 2011.

Palin's committee, SarahPAC, raised about $752,000 during the second half of 2011, compared with nearly $1.7 million raised earlier in the year. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505245_162-57369101/super-pacs-set-to-disclose-big-donors-tuesday/

We tend to make our heroes super-human; they weren't. Reagan was a great president; but, he had flaws. It was on his “watch” that the Marine Barracks in Beirut was truck bombed; killing 241 Marines, Sailors and Soldiers ...mostly Marines. Much of what led to that tragedy had to do w/the same type of ridiculous ROE’s we see in Afghanistan today. The ROE's were enacted due to diplomatic pressure from the Reagan administration; which was anxious to "show the flag." As you point out, Reagan had to compromise and take Bush 41 as his VeeP (not his first choice, either).

Read about the life of Benjamin Franklin; an inventor, a visionary and a brilliant diplomat whom I find comparable to Gingrich in many ways. Franklin had a common-law marriage to his wife and was somewhat of a reprobate in his personal life. Despite his sick wife's continual pleas to have him come home from Europe; Franklin refused and she eventually died alone while he caroused in England.

My problem w/men like Rush, Beck et al; is that they represent themselves as thoughtful agents of Conservatism and political commentary; but, their actions tell me that they are more about keeping the different factions of the Conservative movement somewhat divided; and, thus, powerless. In the end they will all lead us back towards whomever the GOP nominee is. They will never take a principled stand; even against such a charlatan as Romney.

My point here is that people are holding Newt and others up to an imaginary standard of perfection that really never existed. I can't tell you what you should do or what will come to pass; however, I intend to keep observing, listening, reading, processing and watching what messages and signals are coming from people like Sarah Palin; who seems the most trustworthy as best I can tell. I will continue to work to support Newt; unless there is a better Conservative who can block Romney. Here in VA I will have to vote for Ron Paul in the primary because Romney is the only other name on the ballot and no write-ins are allowed.

That's where I am “at” for the moment.

Take care and be well.

-Geoff

Hey, I’m a nice guy too....all I asked for were the details...didn't ask you to do the work. Not for nothing but homey isn't going to do a search on Palin and sort through a myriad of ca-ca to try and find some fuzzy allegation with which you failed to provide any further details....

I'm sure you would ask the same from me....

Yeah, yeah, yeah. LOL

Everyone is informing me that FL is a closed Primary. Ooops.

Makes it worse in mind.

He had to go for it in any case to get to the perception that he is relevant.

Newt has has more Shiite thrown at him than this and I believe he can prevail in this race.

Now if I could get the Pythagorean theorists to keep their pipes shut about his so called 60% dislike making him unelectable.

He had numbers like that before and still he accomplished what no one could.

I gave you 2011 that proved I was correct on that number. Why would I lie on the second. And normally, I would go refind the other number, but I learned long ago on this forum the "I'm going to do the work for you" tatic.

But I'll be nice again. Here you go with info on 2010. http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2011/07/sarahpac-raises-165-million-major-l.html

A third party is not free to emerge. Both major parties have made it very difficult for third parties.

How hard could it be to DUPE a bunch of senior SS recipients living out their retirement? A bunch of uneducated losers.

We call them AARP Crap Weasels.

They voted to make their home states liberal $hitholes, then weaseled out of paying for their stupidity with higher taxes a fuel/heating costs and moved down here to do the same thing with their votes again.
