Unemployed out of work longer than six months
New data shows Florida is the worst state in the country to lose a job. Last year, 53% of jobless people in Florida were out of work longer than six months, according to the Brookings' Hamilton Project.
Analysts blame it on the implosion of the housing market, which came to a screeching halt in 2007.
The state's unemployment rate soared to one of the highest in the nation, peaking at 12% in December 2010.
In the past year, the state's employment rate has dropped, following the national trend. About 130,000 jobs were created, bringing the unemployment rate to 9.9%.

I’m not going to disagree with the title of the story, but the premise is a complete lie.
I lost my job back in November, and I’ve been really struggling to find another one. Thankfully I have no debt except my mortgage and saved a lot of money for this eventuality, but as of this writing, the pot is running very close to empty.
Praying for work very soon, but not because of the shrinking housing market.
I’ll remember to lose my job in another state.
And this has nothing to do with the high illegal count there?
And yet, they just voted for King of Bain, Mr. “I love to fire people”.
They don’t call us Flori-DUH for nuttin.
I moved to FL for a "good" job in 2000, and was "downsized" in 2007. I had to leave the state to find an equivalent paying job, as there was NOTHING available (that fact is a study in its own right). I took a beating when I sold my house, but rejoiced in the fact that I actually did manage to sell it. Sadly for those I left behind, my sale is still the high-water mark in my old development (North of Tampa). Real estate prices continued to plummet after I left and the same house is selling for $40-50k lower than what I sold mine for 5 years ago...
Wife and I lost jobs in VA and were forced into early retirement. It’s not the state as much as the industry in which you work. Economic cycles are a fact of life regardless of government interference trying to manipulate them.
I’m in FL and was laid from a defense contractor after 33 years. The company became bloated and mis-managed and the political correctness mandated minorities and women be put in positions of authority, which lead to the RIF. They have clubs/support groups for latino, blacks, women and gay/transgendered. The gay/lesbian transgendered “club” only had 7 members, but the word was there were some “secret” members.
Anyway, I had another job paying about the same in a month. The new company doesn’t do any of that bs PC crap.
But I will say that unless you are highly skilled it is extremely hard to find good paying jobs.

I’m actually planning on moving to FL (Palm Beach area) this spring/summer. I am in the IT field Iseries Software Developer(AS400 programmer analyst). Hopefully I will be able to find a job in that area of FL. I have family in both Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart.
I think this author needs to check the unemployment figures in Nevada.
I think this author needs to check the unemployment figures in Nevada.
Nevada has the following distinctions:
Highest unemployment rate.
Highest number of bankruptcies.
Highest number of foreclosures.
After I got my paper at UF, I headed straight for Texas and I never looked back.
Smart move!
