A prowler got more than he bargained for early this morning when he tried to break into a home in St. Johns. The homeowners noticed an open gate and things out of place last night, so the husband slept downstairs and armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun.

He heard noise just before 4:00am and confronted a man at his back door trying to get inside, firing three rounds, hitting the suspect who rode off on a bicycle. Officers searched the neighborhood around North Seward and Willamette Boulevard, finding and arresting 54-year-old Oscar Taylor Jr. behind a church. He was treated for a wound and taken to jail, but has yet to be charged.

The homeowner bought the gun in 1970 and says he hadn't fired it in more than 40 years. He loads the shotgun with three rubber bullets followed by a lethal round. The weapon was seized for evidence, but authorities do not anticipate any criminal charges against the homeowners. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office will review the case and present it to a Grand Jury.

Earlier this week, a La Center homeowner fatally shot a prowler.

The weapon was seized for evidence

That makes as much sense as seizing a security alarm from a bank if it went off during a robbery, then publishing that fact in the news media for all to know. The police should only seize someone's protection if they provide a replacement. They need it even more.

It would be interesting to fire some of those “creative” loads just to see what happens.

I have 7 shot to get their attention, and buck and ball to take em out.

My top two rounds are 00 buck for close quarters work and then it's rifled slugs all the way down, in case there are other zombies firing from cover. I live in the boonies so I'm not worried about penetrating any walls.

That said I'm thinking of getting an auto shottie. I'm less quick with a pump than I was when I was a wee sprite.

I just received my Mossberg 930 SPX, but have yet to test it out. Yes, 00 buck is good all the way around. I do not have slugs, may be time to get some!
