A prowler got more than he bargained for early this morning when he tried to break into a home in St. Johns. The homeowners noticed an open gate and things out of place last night, so the husband slept downstairs and armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun.

He heard noise just before 4:00am and confronted a man at his back door trying to get inside, firing three rounds, hitting the suspect who rode off on a bicycle. Officers searched the neighborhood around North Seward and Willamette Boulevard, finding and arresting 54-year-old Oscar Taylor Jr. behind a church. He was treated for a wound and taken to jail, but has yet to be charged.

The homeowner bought the gun in 1970 and says he hadn't fired it in more than 40 years. He loads the shotgun with three rubber bullets followed by a lethal round. The weapon was seized for evidence, but authorities do not anticipate any criminal charges against the homeowners. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office will review the case and present it to a Grand Jury.

Earlier this week, a La Center homeowner fatally shot a prowler.

I hope the SEIZED WEAPON will be returned or will it end up in some cops gun collection.

I can understand nor wanting to kill someone and his method appears to work.

In the fall there was a self defensive stabbing near me by an armed CCW holder. Said he didn’t want to escalate the situation any more than he needed to. Said he had the gun in one hand and the knife in the other.

Personally I think I’d shoot someone who still came at me when I had a gun and a knife.

I hope there is a neighbor who can loan him a replacement until he can get his firearm back.

“Rubber bullets? From a shotgun?”

Haven’t you ever heard of a liberal shotgun from Loony Lefty Oregon that shoots condoms instead of bullets?

I wouldn’t call it success. I would say the homeowner was very very lucky.

Fail = “firing three rounds, hitting the suspect who rode off on a bicycle.”

finding and arresting 54-year-old Oscar Taylor Jr. behind a church

I hope the next time, and I am sure that there will be a next time, someone uses a lethal round and ends the life of Oscar Taylor, Jr. And, if Oscar Taylor, Sr. is still alive, someone should give him a good kick in the arse for doing such a fine job raising his son.

You’ve got that right. I knew a Kentucky state police officer that used to show off his growing gun collection.

He probably had 30 guns that he got from criminal cases. He could even tell me what crime each individual gun was used in. Kind of a strange collection.

Those lockers aren’t as secure as one would think!

I heard this one on the news the other day. It got me curious enough to try to look up rubber shotshells. I did find that there are some VERY unusual shotshell loads out there:

Indeed. I keep a load of some unusual rifled slugs in my 12 ga Mossberg 500a.
They have the rifled slug that is made of nylon which sits behind a .65 caliber ball. It turns your shotgun into a pump-action or semi-auto musket. Surprisingly accurate with good range.

True. Nevertheless, I will continue to rely on my peacemaker with hollow points of the 45 caliber persuasion.

A dead person doesn’t sue. They also don’t come back with “friends” when they are well.
