In the third fatal shooting involving New York City police this month, an off-duty officer shot and killed a teenager who allegedly tried to rob him on a Brooklyn street, authorities said.

The 50-year-old officer, whose name wasn't released, was walking to the subway on his way to work just before midnight Sunday when he was accosted by two teens on the Bushwick street, police said. One, a 15-year-old, gestured as if he had a gun in his pocket and grabbed the officer from behind.

In the next instance, the officer was struck in the face with a wooden cane ...

I’d say definitely justified. He gave the perp every chance to drop the cane he had struck him with. And there were two of them to cope with.

But I would agree, how come you have to be an O.D.P.O. in NYC in order to defend yourself in such a situation?

.

DAMN....DAMN....DAMN.....I always hate to hear that some young man was FATALLY shot.

How come it's seldom like in the old cowboy movies where the bad guy is G-U-T shot by Clint or the Duke and left in the desert slowly bleeding to death with buzzards flying overhead?

Of course, that's just my opinion,,,,,,,,,, pilgrim.

Please...this officer and any one else that had a gun available to stop criminal activity is a hero. Just because he was an off-duty police officer makes no difference. All who stand up against crime are heros!

I just hope that the justice system gives the same benefit to the rest of us that do our duty.

I think he meant that citizens can’t defend themselves, but off duty cops can.

That is, carry a gun.

A poor common (say unarmed) citizen would be a meat run for the hospital. Notice how the NYC elite are armed, whereas the common people are just waiting to be victims.

Understand...sorry If I took that wrong. Yes, the best would be an article about a concealed carry fellow that took down that criminal. Heck, here in Texas, the would be the norm...

Perhaps you’d be happy if it were a wooden gun with wooden bullets or maybe you just wanted the cop dead?

Of course. What is more is that they get a very lucrative pay plan, benefits, and wonderful retirement for life.
All the unwashed, normal citizens can not (in many, most states) carry and are that mercy of the criminal.

Ask him:

They ruined his life for defending himself. Had this officer been a engineer on his way to work a night shift at a data processing facility instead, he'd be facing the wrath of Bloomberg right now.

Excuse me! Just who is that fellow and how does his experience apply here? Or are you tempting us for other reasons - he does look like a Morman to me...

Ah yes...remember him now but do not know what happened to him. He was actually a hero as I remember. Can’t believe that the (our) justice system held otherwise! If otherwise held up - then justice has been denied!

Read the Wikipedia article. He got a year for handgun possession, but cleared of assault and attempted murder. The four nimrods did win $43,000,000 in a civil suite, but Goetz claims he’s never paid a penny.
