A 62-year-old Greer homeowner died as a result of a shootout with a woman who attempted to rob him at gunpoint at his front door, authorities said Tuesday evening.

Greer Police Lt. Jim Holcombe said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:18 a.m. Monday at 203 Pelham St., and found two people with gunshot wounds inside the residence.

“The investigation revealed that the homeowner answered the door at his residence, and the suspect asked for some money. When the victim refused to give her any money, she pulled a gun and he (then) pulled a gun,” according to a written statement from the Greer Police Department.

The Greenville County Coroner's Office identified the homeowner as Douglas J. Burgess Jr. Burgess died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the chest, Greenville County Deputy Coroner Kent Dill said via phone. Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, identified as Tamika Yvette Weatherspoon, 34, was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she died in surgery at 10:32 a.m. Monday. Her last known address was 101 Tremont Ave. in Greer. An autopsy revealed she died as a result of a single gunshot wound to an upper leg, Dill said.

I wonder if there is any history of Tamika Yvette Weatherspoon on the internet?

Yep - and you will be so surprised.

So she bled out from a femoral hit, eh? Good. I hope they were tardy about administering pain killers.

God bless her victim.

Big artery up there. It’s an easier kill shot than the heart, for some...

Femoral artery. Bisect that and there is no way to put enough pressure on it yourself to slow the bleeding.

You'll bleed out in minutes.

Must have hit the femoral artery... Sounds like she fired first and then he fired as he fell. Sad. He should have taken her out more swiftly.

If someone is on your doorstep trying to rob you with a firearm, clearly, any delay is not good.

There are dozens of versions of this story. But I think I found something.

Check out this list of detainees recently released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center, under Weatherspoon:

She was released on January 20th.

Mug shot from that site:

She died in surgery, probably threw a clot to the lungs and that killed her.

There is a major artery that runs through the thigh. If you get hit there, you’ll bleed out real quick.

The lesson to be learned here is to answer the door with gun in hand when the amish come a’knocking.

A weapon in your hand is worth two in their holsters.

Don’t usually hear about the homeowner losing. Seems to me, if someone only wanted money, and had a gun pointed at me, I would just give her money instead of trying to draw on someone who already has a gun pointed at me. Hard to win that one. Then again, she might just shoot me after she gets the money. Tough situation, and the good guy doesn’t always win.

This story does not compute for me.

Woman knocks on the door and asks for money.

Homeowner says “No!” So she pulls a weapon and shoots the homeowner.

The homeowner draws his weapon and shoots her.

It just makes no friggin’ sense.

BTW, the homeowner who died is a Nam vet.

There’s missing pieces of the puzzle.

From what I read, sounds like he fired as he was drawing. This would explain the low hit in the upper leg. She then fired at his chest. At least, that’s how I intepret it.

Sever an artery and you can bleed out pretty quickly.
