There are assets tasked with the SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses, the Wild Weasel missions), if necessary. And then there are the assets tasked with the main part of the strike package. In the case of the battlefield support mission that would be the Warthog. An entire book can be written on strike package planning, and no doubt one has likely been published by Air University (Maxwell AFB).
