I’m agree with you. This is his mother, now matter how wretched a mother she is. My relationship with my mother was pretty destructive at times, so I can understand his desire to keep his distance. But still, he should be a better son than she was a mother. He should help her but keep her at arm’s length.

This is all speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if mom and sister did something related to Morgan's fame and rising fortune right about then. I think this is less about "my mommy was mean to me when I was a kid", and more "my mother and sister are greedy b****es who nearly bankrupted me".
