The only way for there to be a nominee other than Gingrich or Romney is for Ron Paul win enough delegates to deny Gingrich or Romney a first-ballot nomination, and for both Gingrich and Romney to be so unpopular that their hand-picked delegates peel off in later ballots in favor of a new candidate who would have gotten few if any first-round votes. The more likely outcome would be for the Ron Paul delegates to pick the winner between Gingrich and Romney. Not sure that is much of an outcome to be wished.

Another way would be for one of those two to be forced to drop out and the other to face a growing party revolt, leading to one or more new candidates entering the race. Recent history and accepted wisdom says that cannot happen, but this year might be the one that breaks the pattern.
