But! Reagan vowed, when he left office after his second term, to push against term limits.
“Term limits for ALL elected officials…Power to the people!”
The great irony of that statement is that terms limits inhibit, rather than enhance, the political power of the people.
Ronald Reagan put it best in his presidential farewell address in 1989 when he said that terms limits are ”a preemption of the people’s right to vote for whomever they want as many times as they want.”

In my view, while term limits would encourage a small amount of politicians to focus on their job without undue influence of lobbyists, I believe it would simply encourage the majority to be even more careerist - with only a short time in one job, grab what you can, and then run for the next office up the ladder.

ALSO - term limits would definitely strengthen the unelected apparatchiks who so often write laws and policy anyway. Especially with a Gov’t as large as ours, with revolving politicians, these people would become even more expert and needed to make policy and run the massive bureaucracy.

I’m not against them per se - just pointing out there will be unforeseen consequences.

It would be better just to limit the size of Gov’t and its power - then the opportunity to misuse such power would not be there in the first place.

Ronald Reagan wasn’t always right.

Our system is corrupted, so the people vote for who’se on the ballot. Who’se on the ballot is rigged. Take Congressman West in Florida. He didn’t toe the party line so they changed the system so he couldn’t be re-elected.
