Gov. Jerry Brown laid out a detailed plan to alter California's state and local public retirement systems on Thursday and immediately drew fire from his core labor constituency.
The details delivered to the Legislature on Thursday generally tracked with an outline he unveiled in October. Representatives of a union coalition hoped to negotiate what they consider a less severe package. On Thursday, they said they felt blindsided.
"To launch this bomb in the early stages of the legislative season can only be counterproductive," said Steve Maviglio, spokesman for the union coalition . . .

Agreed. But, I suspect “Moonbeam” can read a balance sheet and knows that he can’t get blood out of a turnip.
California is broke! The taxpayers are broke! The homeowners are broke! Businesses are broke! Anybody and any business with the means or ability to move to another state is doing so. Thus, Jerry realizes that the gravy train has left the station and the only way California will survive is to make the unions take it in the shorts, just like the rest of us. Slowly at first, but ultimately, hard and fast.
(At ,I hope that’s what’s going through his drug-addled pea-brain.)
Soon the corpse will be picked so clean the unions will have to squeeze their sustenance out of the budget going to illegals.

The retirement age of 57 is absolutely insane. Brown’s measures are a drop in the bucket. The union’s protestations are probably nothing more than cover for Moonbeam doing a tiny fraction of what should be done.
Well then, if that’s how they feel about it, Jerry will just walk it back, like Susan G Komen. Simple enough.
And the Rats in the legislature will just continue to fund the budget with “magic money”.
Oh what to do, what to do. Should Republicans vote unanimously for this? (Yes) Should Democrats vote for it, against it? Should the Unions start trying to put more Republicans in power now to stop Brown from getting his two thirds majority in 2012. I'm LOVING IT!
“The retirement age of 57 is absolutely insane.”
You need to read it more carefully. He’s proposing to raise the retirement age for “public safety employees” from 50 to 57 and all others from 65 to 67. It isn’t enough, but if it passed it would be a start. Jerry caused all of this to happen in the first place back when he was knocking boots with Linda Ronstadt in the back of his ‘57 Plymouth ( i.e. his first two terms as governor). It’s truly fitting that as a bald headed old fart, he has to clean up after himself. That is, if he actually can. In truth, Jerry is an abject failure as a politician. Not only did he screw up California, just look at the mess he left in Oakland.
57 is still nuts. Needs to be at least 65 and 67 wouldn’t hurt.
“Soon the corpse will be picked so clean the unions will have to squeeze their sustenance out of the budget going to illegals.”
LOL. But we will know things are about over when the California AIDS research budget gets cut.
“...just look at the mess he left in Oakland.”
In all fairness, every mayor of Oakland leaves a mess. Oakland is a mess.
