Madison Politiscope: Gun politics a likely factor in Seidel-Galloway showdown(WI)

Being the number two chief of an ultra-minority party is no fun.

So it is no surprise that state Rep. Donna Seidel, D-Wausau, the assistant Assembly Democratic leader, declared herself a candidate in the likely recall election against state Sen. Pam Galloway, R-Wausau.

Galloway was first elected in 2010, when she upset then-Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker as part of an epic Republican wave that saw the GOP win large majorities in both the Assembly and State Senate.

After last summer's Senate recalls cut the GOP Senate majority from a five-seat margin to a one-seat margin, Democrats have been able to force compromise from Republicans on some issues by working with the few remaining moderates in the party, such as Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center. Recently, for instance, a controversial mining bill that easily passed the Assembly has been halted because several Senate Republicans are raising concerns about its environmental impact.

Clearly, the best means for Democrats to regain power would be to oust Gov. Scott Walker in a recall election. However, in case they do not prevail in that tough fight, winning at least one of the four Senate recall elections they will likely prompt in the coming months would be a nice consolation prize.

But surely, there must be something different between an election in north-central Wisconsin and, say, Dane County?

That's certainly what Seidel's opponent indicated in a recent interview with the Cap Times. Galloway, who helped shepherd concealed carry legislation through the Senate and is a supporter of the more extreme "constitutional carry," which would abolish all permitting processes for guns, believes that her support for gun rights helps her establish rapport with many area voters who would otherwise be disinterested in her candidacy.

Explained Galloway:

I hope Galloway survives the recall as she was very good on the CCW bill and we would not have got it through without her and other GOP legislators working it through the Democrats’ objections. We can lose CCW if the Dems get back in, plus the Dems want to jump onto the debt/tax slide again.

Wisconsin Galloway Recall Ping — Gun Rights Issue

If you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list, just FReep Mail me.

I worked on entering signatures in the data base in the Galloway recall. There were lots of squirrely signatures turned in. Whole pages seemed to be filled out by one person with all the signatures being just scribbles. Hmmmm.
