Stephen Harper fears Iran would use nuclear weapons if it was able to produce them

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper insisted he is not preparing the Canadian public for war with Iran but, in his starkest warning yet, he said he fears the regime in Tehran is prepared to use nuclear weapons, if it manages to produce them.

In an interview with the National Post and Postmedia News, Mr. Harper said Iran’s quest to develop weapons of mass destruction is “a grave threat to peace and security.”

“For the first time in history, we are facing a regime that not only wants to attain nuclear weapons but a regime that has, compared to virtually all other holders of nuclear weapons in the past, far less fear of using them,” he said.

Pressed on whether the use of a nuclear device would constitute an act of suicide by Tehran, he responded: “I’m not sure that would dissuade them…. We’re dealing with a fanatical and dangerous regime.”

The National Post has to be excerpted, but quotes from Stephen Harper do not.

----------

“To suggest anyone has an easy solution would be false. I don’t have an easy path forward but I think we need to understand we have got a regime based in Tehran that is a gross violator of human rights; that is based on an extreme fundamentalist version of its particular religion; that makes threats to its neighbours; and, that is clearly and unequivocally moving towards, not just the production of nuclear weapons, but the acquisition of delivery systems for nuclear weapons. ---

But Ron Paul says the Iranians just want a nuke to be respected. The crazy Iranians would never, ever use them... would they?

A breath of fresh air to hear a leader who gets it.

Harper knows the EMP attack that would cripple the US will get Canada at the same time. Mexico as well. Placement is everything.

I know. I can't believe it either.

The liberals enact "hate laws"; almost thought crime, against their own citizens, and yet refuse to react when the leadership of Iran voices it's intentions very clearly. This makes no sense.

*spit*

"Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary."

So what’s “in it” for the people who deny it?

An Iranian launch of nuclear weapons against Israel becomes complicated quickly.

The US cannot reflexively counterattack with nukes for fear of Chinese & Russian responses. Either or both could assume WWIII has started, with nuclear Armageddon the result.

Certainly, the US can use conventional forces to attack Iran, but that could take months of missile & air strikes to be a deterrent, & during that time Iran may launch more nukes. And naval actions in the confines of the Gulf will not be without US losses.

That pretty much leaves Israel to respond with nukes, & I don't think they will hesitate.

What follows could very well be WWIII.

All of this could be avoided, of course, if the West would attack Iran BEFORE they get nuclear weapons. But Obama will never attack Iran.

As to when Israel MIGHT attack Iran, the perfect time, IMO, would be right after the US election in November. The US will be in political upheaval no matter who wins the Presidency. An Obama loss would provide even more reason to attack at this time. Attacking before the US election could boost Obama into a second term - not good for Israel. An attack months after the election might be politically impossible, with either a confident, uncooperative Obama to deal with, or a Pub President who insists on trying his hand at diplomacy before war, as have all past Presidents.

Would you mind relating that thought to the fall of Rome?

Does it refer to the before-the-fall period?
