Actually, cost-per-unit, it is very expensive.
And is way over-weight and initial testing of weapons load-out was a mess, requiring internal changes to the weapons bay and revamping of its envisioned employment envelope/protocol for an A/G mission.
And other “technical” development challenges that should not be discussed here played (and are playing) a huge role in the difficulties of going IOC.
Thing is, it will eventually be a fine aircraft once the details are worked out.
LM promised too much too soon, thereby getting the contract before they had the airframe totally figured out and able to build it in a timely manner and at the promised cost.
