Gingrich’s Speech — How to Make a Bad Night Worse
The National Review ^ | February 5, 2012 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/05/2012 3:49:00 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Newt Gingrich’s post–Nevada caucus speech included about three minutes of inspired moments about issues and ideas in his usual imaginative and intellectually robust style. So why does he not just stay with that — given that he often seems more dynamic and glib than Romney in his attacks on Obama, and not long ago gained ground despite the attacks against him? Instead, he now turns ad nauseam to the tired reasons why he loses — yes, including lots of Mormons in Nevada — and ends up as Richard Nixon not going to get kicked around any more.

But whether he knows it or not, Gingrich is becoming a caricature of petulance: no concession in Nevada, no call to Romney, no awareness that his inability to raise money at levels of a political rival or to match a competing campaign organization is not necessarily unfair. That’s politics, and Gingrich knows it. I don’t understand why he thinks now losing to Romney in 2012 is solely due to Romney’s innate deviousness in a way McCain beating Romney in 2008 was not — given that Romney was about the same in both 2008 and 2012. Gingrich seems oblivious to the fact that McCain’s style and history gave him advantages over Romney’s money and hardball in ways Gingrich’s own proven liabilities apparently do not.

Gingrich should carefully play a tape of his post–Nevada caucus performance, and then he would quickly grasp that it was little more than a litany of excuses, whining, and accusations — characterized by stream-of-conscious confessionals and rambling repetitions. And, I think, will hurt him more than anything yet in the campaign.

Mitt is probably the only candidate that can lose to Obama. This is why the establishment GOP is forcing a Socialist like Mitt on us.

I'm sorry but the election if being fixed. It's so that the voters really do not have a choice in 2012.

It is time to wake up and realize Newt is petty, whiny, egotistical, unstable, and self serving. As the joke goes Newt will love America til it gets sick.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still just a pig, no amount of defending Newt will make him look any better.

What kind of man would try to change the election rules in a state after the fact , because he did not win.. Newt. You would think Newt would know the election rules of states, being the great Historian that he proclaims to be.

What kind of man would not call another candidate to congratulate him on his win.. Newt. Why because Newt is a poor sport, and a sad “little” man. I use “Little” not in size but in character.

There are five more events before Super Tuesday on Apr 6. They are:
Colorado, Feb 7
Minnesota, Feb 7
Arizona, Feb 27
Michigan, Feb 27
Washington, Mar 3

By the end of Super Tuesday on Apr 6 we’ll have a much clearer picture of a viable challenger to Romney. Money for that challenger will be critical and hopefully doesn’t dry up by them.

You seem to have serious problems dealing with reality. Santorum CANNOT win the primary, ABSOLUTELY CANNOT. No rational person could think so. Even most Ron Paul supporters seem to have realized that Ron Paul can’t win at this point, which makes you less rational than a Ron Paul supporter. One thing Santorum can do is help ensure a Romney victory by staying in the race, which makes conservatives who support him or give him money even more ignorant of reality.

Another point where you ignore reality...you rate candidates on “fidelity” but support Cain and blame the media for him getting out of the race. The main was giving money to a woman that his wife did not know about and calling her regularly. As soon as this came out in the news, he got out of the race. Nobody who was innocent of charges like that would drop out of the race over them. And if they were innocent, the fact that they would run away based on false accusations instead of defending themselves would most certainly disqualify them as presidential material. But Cain was obviously guilty of at least some of the accusations, something that should be obvious to anyone with the capacity for rational thought. Since I’m a Christian, I will gladly support him as President in the next primary IF he comes clean, apologizes, stops his behavior and repents. Any Christian who would fail to forgive him or Newt for their past indiscretions is a CINO (Christian in Name Only) and does not understand basic biblical principles as exemplified by parables like that of the Prodigal Son.

Agreed. Mitt’s job is to give 0bama 4 more years and maintain status quo for our minders. I’d call Mitt a tool but I think he’s complicit.

I recommend Mike Gallagher in addition to Mark Levin if you’re looking for a good go-to radio host this election cycle. Mike has revealed himself to be a true conservative in this cycle and always is completely fair, which means unlike other so-called conservatives, he doesn’t ignore Romney’s gaffes or pile on Newt for falsely perceived gaffes. It’s an entertaining show too.

We've given Obozo and the Dems too much campaign fodder to use on either of these guys in the General Election.

That is absolute nonsense. Newt hasn't unloaded nearly a fraction of what the Dems will have in store for Mitt. In fact if you add up what the DNC, Was-a-Man Schultz and Axelrod have put out so far in ads and interviews, they've arguably already put together a stronger anti-Mitt campaign than Newt has. They have probably already done a better job outlining the unethical behavior and unjust enrichment that Mitt engaged in at Bain Capital than Newt has. Mitt's attacks on Newt have been so dishonest and inaccurate, that you might be right that the Dems never would have even thought of doing them, but I'm not sure they would imitate them. With 10 times as many people seeing the ads in the general election, I think the Dems would be more afraid that the truth would get out and a backlash would develop against the lies. Certainly the Republicans will have more money to respond in the general election than Newt has now, which would increase that risk. The Dems will have a much harder time attacking Newt in the general election than they would Mitt. There isn't much substance to criticize Newt on since he's been a successful leader for decades. And it's risky to put out lies when your opponent has the money to respond.

Newt is here to FIGHT and WIN ...

As Rush Limbaugh said ... (paraphrased) ... "the Florida exit polls (Baptists supporting Romney, etc) DO NOT matter when Romney has run 65 "negative" TV spot every one TV spot that Newt Gingrich had the budget for ... 13,000 versus 200"

Think Korea, Chosin Reservoir ... 10,000 U.S. Marines surrounded by 250,000 Red Chinese ...

even the U.S. Marines pulled-out ... albeit as "Fighting and Chinese Kick-Ass Retreat" as General Chesty Puller described it ...

Newt's Saturday night speech was VERY important ...

His target audience was those 200,000 plus "little-guy donors" who have given $ 200 or less ... pretty much maybe all they can afford ...

I am in that number ($ 300) ...

American Patiots (in that number) are THE ONES that work campaign phone banks, walk neighborhood precients, attend rallies, are the political "Boots on the Ground" ...

We are Newt Gingrich's "Chosin Reservoir Marines" ... fighting desperately against 65:1 financial odds ...

We are Winton Churchill's Royal Air Force (RAF) ... fighting desperately against the NAZI-style propaganda machine ... funded by George Soros, Bush-41 and Barbara and Jeb, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid ... and by the "world-wide" Temple of Mormon ...

"WE SHALL RETURN" ... however ... just as (my namesake) General Douglas "Dugout Doug" McArthur said of the temporary U.S. retreat from the Phillipines in 1942 ...

The "same" General Douglas McArthur that engineered the "courageous" and "brilliant" Inchon Landings ... that BROKE THE BACK of the North Korean army ...

left them shattered in dissary, defeated in detail ...

And let History record that "THIS WAS THEIR FINEST HOUR" in America's Twenty-First Century ...

Today (this Sunday morning) I PROUDLY stand (as a Florida resident) with Newt Gingrich ...

Two (2.000) Newt 2012 campaign signs are STILL in my front yard ... where they will remain ... even "after" Newt Gingrich is elected President of the United States ...

And as Newt predicted ... "We will WIN in Tampa" at the GOP Convention ...

and ... "We WILL defeat Barrack Hussein Obama" in November 2012 for the Presidential election ...

=====================================

Has it occurred to ANYONE (even astute Free Republic observers) ... and that (neo-nitwit soap-selling cynical media whore Mark Steyn) ...

WHY ... WHY ... WHY ... ???

the political "long-knives" are being murderously thrust into Newt Gingich ...

especially by GOP E-RINOs (specifically like "Barbara Bush") ...

BECAUSE Newt Gingrich is the FIRST PRESIDENT (since Thomas Jefferson in 1802) that wants to Constitutionally) "castrate" the "completely" OUT-OF-CONTROL U.S. Federal Judiciary ...

Specifically (again) ... "TREASONOUS traitors" (calmly, deliberately stated) like SCOTUS Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg ...

who "astoundingly" stated this week that the U.S. Constitution WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH for Egypt ... and that the (Animal Farm, corrupted, socialist) constiution of South Africa was better than what Jefferson, Hamilton, Payne, (et al honorarium) penned ...

pledging their "lives, fortunes, and sacred honor" ...

=====================================

For Me ?

Newt's Saturday night speech is his way of saying "NUTS!!!!" to the Romney Campaign ... George and Barbara Bush ... and his "friends" at the New York Times ...

I stand with Newt Gingrich ... I stand for FREEDOM ...

I don’t think that MItt will lose to Zero. I think Big Money (the banks) has taken over America and that Mitt is even more of a stalking horse for the banks than Obama. Therefore he will win since Zero does their bidding financially but is unreliable in foreign affairs, being a Muslim and all.

Newt seemed to clearly be sick, or perhaps exhausted last night. He was having a lot of trouble with his throat during the press conference. The main problem I saw was a bad attitude from reporters and a whole lot of nonsense questions like “why is Romney in your head?” Do they ask Romney why Obama seems to be in his head after he spends time talking about Obama? It’s difficult to deal with a hostile press in a press conference. He probably should have just refused to answer some of the questions that he did, but that might not have looked good either. Otherwise Newt ever since his concession speech in Florida has been just terrific this week, so this seemed just to be a bad night where he might not have been feeling well.

The only story so far is that Mitt seems to be doing worse than he did 4 years ago in Nevada. He’s got a lower percentage, only HALF the votes he got last time. Newt has a higher percentage and more votes than McCain did last time. Ron Paul’s vote total went down but his percentage went up. However only 71% of the votes are in it seems so these numbers could change.

“Well, I’m definitely supporting Newt over Romney but here lately, my man Newt has come across as a tired, angry, desperate old man.”

Unfortunately, that's because he is one. I can't think of a better statesman for Secretary of State than Gingrich. He would be the best we've ever had in this country's history.
As far as Romney goes, I think there was a personal thing between he and Governor Perry. I supported Perry in every way I could. His endorsement of Gingrich is kind of like your husband introducing you to your new husband as a condition of his will. I just can't fall in love with the guy and the decision will already have been made by the time my primary comes around. When my primary came around last time, Romney had been forced to withdraw by the Republican elitist in favor of McCain. Romney did so with grace and dignity.
I know that Nevada's voters were 1 in 4 Mormon with the economy their number one issue. You don't find Mormons having to worry about abortions which is the number one issue of the right. I also know Romney won 51% of the “very conservative” voters with Gingrich getting 24%. I think a combination percentage of Paul and Santorum was a good show for them there. Having had to endure 5% and less for the best candidate in the race, I know how I felt when Governor Perry went down. He endured the most hateful of attacks from Imperfect Citizen Cain and his raucous crew of Cainiacs and Michele Bachman. I read FReepers hideous comments in disbelief. I imagine Romney supporters are in the same state. Perry took it courageously, with humor and with dignity. He withdrew graciously. He didn't give all kinds of excuses. He just said he could see no path forward...and my heart broke. No path forward.
I'm not saying what Gingrich “needs to do.” Only God knows that. What I am saying is that I will enthusiastically vote for Romney in the general if he's there. I won't read or entertain the vicious hate-speak anymore. For better or worse and in my opinion, it can't get worse than Obama.

Sorry, but Newt has been off his game. I honestly think his age is catching up to him. He actually stood there at the debate at one point for 4-5 uncomfrtable seconds not able to think of what to say. That’s not like the old Newt.

If he stays in the gutter with Bishop Romney he loses due to the huge money imbalance...he can’t compete negative vs. negative. His only hope at this point is to get back to the old Newt and start inspiring people again. Poeple are looking for someone who can fix our problems and that inspires them. but mostly they are looking for someone that can defeat Zero.

You’re not alone. I feel the exact same way about Rush. He has always been a hero of conservatism to me. The last few weeks, to say I’ve been disappointed in him would be an understatement!

I’ve gone back and forth with that myself.

I just don’t see how Romney can win against Barak. He can’t campaign on any Conservative pillar. Conservatives don’t want him and Moderates will see Obama eviscerate him every time he opens his mouth about commie-care, bailouts, abortion, gay marriage, gun restrictions, etc.

Romney has made the point that he was able to get things done in Mass. by working with the Dems. He’s basically admitting that Dem policies led to any success he claims to have had. Obama will make sure that everyone understands that Romney was (by his own admission) successful because Dems held power.

Conservatives hate him for his stances and, IMHO, Moderates will figure he’s no different than Obama except that Obama has four more years experience than Romney.

I don’t think white boy with nice hair wins against Socialist, black super-hero.

JMHO.

Newt does not have the money to put out the volume of attack ads Romney does, claim no control over them and then look positive in public, so he is making good use of the media attention when he can. He is well aware how many people are watching. He will do this in every state they go to in order to get his message out. It puts him in a bad position to be out in the open as owning his attacks whereas Romney can use his sneak attack ads and claim he has no control.
