WASHINGTON — The United States said that a senior envoy would visit violence-hit Maldives on Saturday as it called for calm following the resignation of the elected president Mohamed Nasheed.
Robert Blake, the assistant secretary of state for South Asia, will visit the Indian Ocean archipelago's capital Male on Saturday, adding the stop to a previously scheduled tour of South Asia, the State Department said.
"We are urging the government and the political parties to work together to resolve this situation peacefully. And we're continuing to monitor the situation," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.
But Nuland -- who a day earlier praised new president Mohamed Waheed for committing to a "peaceful transition" -- stopped short of calling the events a coup and said the United States was seeking information from all sides.
"Assistant Secretary Blake will have a chance to be there and talk to everybody on Saturday," Nuland said.
"In the interim we are urging calm, we're urging dialogue, we're urging President Waheed (who), as you know, has committed to forming a national unity government, and we think that'll also be an important signal to political factions across the Maldives," she said.

The new president is a Gayoom clan crony going back to the late 1970’s.
Gayoom clan will not relent in their struggle to maintain their oligarchy even if it leads to mass murder and burning Male to the ground.
Mohamed Nasheed is a hero worthy of support by all Freepers, the man has faced down political persecution and been tortured for years in Gayoom’s prisons to fight for the basic human rights of all Maldivians. His compatriots have been executed, tortured, imprisoned, exiled, stripped of citizenship, raped, had loved ones murdered and been under constant harassment by Gayoom’s intelligence apparatus and thugs for over three decades.
Mohamed Nasheed’s compatriots have been given life sentences in torture prisons for writing blog entries similar to what Freepers write every day on FR.
And my final point, EVERY SINGLE MAJOR RESORT IN THE MALDIVES IS CONTROLLED BY THE GAYOOM CLAN.
Taking a holiday in the Maldives directly funds the continuation of this murderous thug regime. Please look elsewhere for island holiday vacations.

http://minivannews.com is the ONLY English language news site dealing with the Maldives that can be trusted. Every other Maldivian focused website on the internet in the English, German, Italian, Hindi etc languages is directly linked to the Gayoom clan’s payroll.
This was a coup d’etat by the Gayoom clan using street thugs, their thug intelligence/repression apparatus, and the police union patronage system.
The situation is really ugly and my contacts in Male are scared out of their minds right now... they expect mass executions and exiling again as soon as Gayoom has the international media focus moved off of his island kleptocracy.

Also, these street protests have been going on for a year, all financed by the Gayoom clan and the Imam network.
Ben Bernanke and other Central Bankers are much to blame here, QE caused food inflation in Maldives just like the Middle East, the Maldives can be considered the newest failed state in the “Arab Spring”, the underlying problems of inflation, especially food and energy inflation caused widespread disruptions in an already impoverished economy.
