Are the detainment provisions of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act serious?

Are the detainment provisions of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act serious?

Yes they are.

This is a complicated area, and there has been a lot of word-fudging in spinning this subject. So bear with me as we take things step by step.

**snip**

When you look at sections 1021 and 1022 of the National Defense Authorization Act objectively, they become scary in their potential. If the administration does try to use it to lock up American citizens without habeas corpus, the Supreme Court probably will void the incarceration and require a civilian trial. But in the normal course of events, vindicating one’s rights could take years.

Of course, in America, we traditionally don’t lock up citizens on mere suspicion. . . .

Or is that is now changing?

America’s police state: The drones are coming

Friday, February 10, 2012

A new federal law accelerating domestic use of government aerial surveillance drones brings America frighteningly close to an Orwellian police state.

President Obama is expected to sign the FAA Reauthorization Act, which expedites approval for federal, state and local police to use these drones. The Federal Aviation Administration’s existing case-by-case approach is chilling enough — it’s being sued over its refusal to disclose publicly which agencies use drones and how they’re used.

Still, it’s known that the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection arm uses drones domestically. Now imagine local police drones constantly, unblinkingly tracking — without warrants — your every move and aspect of your property.

Far-fetched? Hardly. Great Britain right now is testing the use of drones to enforce government-subsidized agricultural policies. If successful, drones will replace satellite surveillance. The French government already monitors wine producers with drones.

Literally NOBODY with a scintilla of intelligence can say they were not warned.

My senator was somewhat shocked, but not overly, when an older gentleman during a town hall went off on the issues of NDAA. Frankly if there is any thought regarding parts of the bill being used against the American people, or the potential for misuse, those parts should NOT be in the act because they will be misused or abused. Absolute guaranteed.

Simply a matter of time and need as seen by our domestic enemy.

Given that the NDAA effectively suspends habeus corpus, and was signed into law while everyone was whooping it up on new years eve, it should be front and center of conservative news topics and discussion, yet seems attract surprisingly little interest. It’s almost as if people think by ignoring it, it will magically go away. If this were a thread about Rosie chocking to death on a chicken bone, it would have several hundred comments by now.

And the real truth is that whether this administration uses this law in an evil way there is no guarantee that the next one won’t.....And yes I think the O machine would use any trick in the book (or out) to get their way

The fact that the provision was even put in there is scary.
