So we are staking our hopes on a guy that couldn’t win his own seat in his own state?

Yep. Just like we Republicans did 150 years ago with Abe Lincoln, who failed numerous times before winning. Yes.

That was then, this is now. He ran against a candidate who was pro-gun, pro-life, and during a time of anti-Bush sentiment and the son of a former Pa Governor with a cascade of out-of-state cash from NARAL and EMILY’s LIST

So we are staking our hopes on a guy that couldnt win his own seat in his own state? Whose electoral record do you think is better? Romney's, who lost a Senate bid and ducked a challenging reelection race? Gingrich & Paul's, who sat in a safe congressional districts and never won statewide?
Most of us realized a long time ago that this presidential field was far from perfect.

This is not the same world as it was in 2006. It’s barely the same planet.

Much better to lose an election, than to get kicked out. I think Reagan said something like that once.

Kennedy never lost his senate seat. He would have been a great candidate?

So we are staking our hopes on a guy that couldnt win his own seat in his own state? That's a tired arguement. He WON a lot more elections before he lost that last one. And he lost in 2006. A year when a whole helluva lot of Republicans lost. He lost to the namesake son of a very well liked, pro-life democrat former Governor. He lost in the wake of the Mark Foley scandal. He lost in part because American's were starting to lose faith in the GOP Congress and W (for good reason) and he lost because he played to good soldier and went against his beliefs and personal inclinations to do the sitting President's bidding by endorsing Arlen Spectre 2 years earlier.
That was then. This is now!

Yes, we are ...
Lincoln was a champion and he never gave up. Here is a sketch of Lincoln's road to the White House:
- 1816: His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
- 1818: His mother died.
- 1831: Failed in business.
- 1832: Ran for state legislature - lost.
- 1832: Also lost his job - wanted to go to law school but couldnt get in.
- 1833: Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
- 1834: Ran for state legislature again - won.
- 1835: Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
- 1836: Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
- 1838: Sought to become speaker of the state legislature - defeated.
- 1840: Sought to become elector - defeated.
- 1843: Ran for Congress - lost.
- 1846: Ran for Congress again - this time he won - went to Washington and did a good job.
- 1848: Ran for re-election to Congress - lost.
- 1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state - rejected.
- 1854: Ran for Senate of the United States - lost.
- 1856: Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his partys national convention - got less than 100 votes.
- 1858: Ran for U.S. Senate again - again he lost.
- 1860: Elected president of the United States.

Yes, it is sad, but the guy who never lost an election, and has been re-elected Governor of Texas 3 times, is sadly no longer in the race, and we have what we have.
Gingrich hasn’t won an election since 1998, and never had to compete for more than 200,000 votes or so.. Santorum hasn’t won an election since 2000, but at least it was a full-state election, where he won 2.4 million votes. Romney hasn’t won an election since 2002.
Ron Paul keeps getted elected, but in a single congressional district with no real competition — does that count?
Santorum got more votes in his disastrous senate loss (1.6 million), than Newt Gingrich got in any of his victories. In fact, it’s likely Santorum got more DIFFERENT voters to choose him in his 2006 loss than Gingrich has gotten in all his campaigns put together.

" So we are staking our hopes on a guy that couldnt win his own seat in his own state? "
The Newt supporters are running this old tired old crap again ? you make it sound like he never won a election in his own state.
In case you have not noticed ? Rick Santorum is gaining support in his own state as we speak now... what ? you have the old crank and dial telephone ? get with the times... this is 2012 ...

Oh brother. Haters all around. He won 4 out of 5 elections. How many statewide elections did Newt win?

You’re right. We have to wait until the perfect candidate comes along. The Bible says He’s coming back, but doesn’t say when.

It’s either the guy who couldn’t hold his PA seat, the guy who couldn’t hold his Speakership, the guy who couldn’t hold the Governor of MA job, or crazy Uncle Paul. Take ur pick...
