No matter how deserving, I will always feel uncomfortable naming
anything after a living person.
Reminds me of Mao's China or Saddam's Iraq.
There is an enormous difference between a cult of personality, and the heartfelt honoring of all who make special sacrifices while alive, at the appropriate time.

It's
not silly. Within five or ten years, the narrative's going to be this: Rep. Gabby Giffords was shot down in the street by one of the founders of the Tea Party, who was egged on by things he heard during a Sarah Palin conference call.
Conservatives and Tea Partiers will object, we'll scream and gnash our teeth, and the MSM will completely ignore us. The narrative will be what it is, and it will be forever.
You mark my words. Here me today and believe me tomorrow.

It seems to be that the way to become a Democrat icon is to go the JFK, RFK, Gabby Giffords route and have your brains blown out.

No offense to Ms Giffords, but there are thousands of military heroes - that have given their lives for their country - that deserve such an honor long long long before her.

I agree, but that wouldn’t meet the ulttra-PCism of the DumyCRAP Party.

If she were an honorable and sincere person who cared about America and it's military, she would, instead of feeding her ego (or her astronaut husbands' ego) write a letter to obama and the Secretary of the Navy saying something like:
"I appreciate the idea of naming a ship for me, but also feel it should not be done. There are plenty of military hero's, especially those who were wounded or killed in combat, who could be recognized by this honor. Afterall, I am not a hero, just a civilian who just happened to have been on a street in America and got shot by a mentally ill civilian. Perhaps you could even consider one of the more than a dozen soldiers who were murdered by Major Hussain at Fort Hood. Or, even a better idea would be to name it U.S.S. FORT HOOD. That would be a very patriotic name for a ship. And, very unique...a NAVY ship named for an ARMY base."
"I will be expecting a positive response from you within the next 2 weeks. Thank you. Gabby Gifford, Civilian".

What a bunch of crap. She probably knew this before she retired. Giffords and others in Congress are in a luxury country club where taxpayers not only pay their dues but their compensation too.
She (like all others in Congress) did nothing to deserve a ship being named after her, unless spending other people’s money and getting shot is a qualification. Why isn’t the mental midget who shot her on public trial so we find out what makes him tick?
The young Americans that served multiple tours and the taxpayers who paid deserve naming privileges, not DC.

“...No matter how deserving, I will always feel uncomfortable naming anything after a living person.”
People should be dead before they get a stamp or a ship named after them. Period.
I liked the days when we named classes of ships after things like dead presidents or states or famous battles, etc. Naming stuff after bureaucrats is pathetic.
