Newt Gingrich to Canada: Forget China, bank on Republicans
Politico ^ | 2/10/12 5:20 PM EST | PATRICK REIS

Newt Gingrich has a promise for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper: If you wait for the U.S. elections, Republicans will come through for you on the Keystone XL pipeline.

“My message to Prime Minister Harper: ‘You do not need a partnership with the Chinese,’” Gingrich said during his turn in the Conservative Political Action Conference spotlight Friday afternoon. “If you give us a few months, … when we beat Obama on election night, we will approve [the Keystone XL pipeline] on Jan. 20.”

Gingrich said he would sign an executive order approving Keystone on his first day in office.

Harper’s government has overtly courted China as an energy customer since the Obama administration rejected the oil sands pipeline, and Gingrich and the rest of the GOP field have made the most of it on the campaign trail.

“Obama has been an anti-American energy president, and every American pays the price every time they go to a gas station,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich also used his speech to push the “bold solutions” he repeatedly used to pit himself against “the Republican establishment” — a just-below-the-surface jab at primary front-runner Mitt Romney.

Gingrich also repeated his pledge to abolish the EPA and Energy Department, saying the latter “has been a total failure since it was founded.”

Regarding China, one thing that no one yet has speculated about (that I know of, in any case) is whether or not Harper is trying to ween the Chinese off of Middle Eastern oil (Iran’s especially). Good point. It would make economic sense. ========== I was thinking more like political sense. The smaller share of the global oil market OPEC has, the better. Asian markets for Canadian oil are, as of yet, completely untapped, so I can only presume most of their oil imports come from the Middle East and serve to prop up the over abundance of tyrannical regimes in that part of the world. I, for one, am waaay more scared of Middle Eastern tyrants than I am of China. And it's more than just oil that's in play here. If China and other Asian countries become more reliant on Canadian oil, the democratic world becomes more influencial in that region at the expense of the Middle Eastern tyrants. Harper may have been paving the way for neutralizing East Asian nations should we (Western nations) find ourselves at war with Iran.

Oh, for goodness sakes, No!
*smiling at you*

Here at FR you can let other specific people know when you have posted something. Most forums don't allow that.

I am sending a 'ping' to Clive by entering his name in the "To" box. He will add you to the Canada ping list.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here.

Come on down! There is no doubt in my mind that other foreigners are. They are laundering it through small credit card donations that are below the reporting limits. That’s why Obama had so many that were odd amounts that likely came though a foreign currency exchange.
