US Disarmament Expert: 'The Risk that Nuclear Weapons Will Be Used Is Growing'
Spiegel ^ | 02/10/2012

Anxieties are mounting as nuclear weapons make their way into unstable regions. In a SPIEGEL ONLINE interview, US disarmament expert Richard Burt discusses the growing risk of their use, why allowing Iran to get the bomb could trigger a Sunni-Shiite arms race and how an attack could make citizens demand a police state. [...] The problem with Iran is not that there is necessarily going to be an Israeli-Iranian nuclear conflict. In fact, I think the Israelis would probably deter the Iranians from using nuclear weapons. But the danger is that once Iran acquires these weapons, there's the potential for a cascade of other countries to do the same. Turkey, for example, would be very likely to acquire its own nuclear weapons if Iran went that way; Egypt and Saudi Arabia, too. What we could see is a dangerous Sunni-Shite nuclear arms race -- and that is very worrisome.

IMHO, I would say around 5 years. Even shorter, if Iran develops a nuclear weapon.

I bet these are more “form” than “function.”

To make the bomb they need sufficient materials of the right type which are not available to the common person. They need a delivery system and be able to burst it at altitude to really give it the large area effect... lots of variables. There have been many people to “claim” things and magazines that talk about that. I would give them little credibility.

These rouge nations however have the ability to actually build something, example North Korea (accomplished), Iran (trying)... they also have the ability to develop a delivery system ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sina-1 ), that's why Iran put a satellite into orbit a while back (2005) and has been refining this technology concurrently with their development of “the bomb.” None of this is for civilian use, it's to develop a bomb and delivery system. That's why “Sputnik” was in reality the big deal it was. It wasn't just a symbolic thing where the Soviets had beaten us to the punch, it was their proclamation of the mastery of orbital mechanics. At that point they could target any spot on earth if they so chose. Notice/advanced warning time was reduced to 30 minutes, the ability to defend oneself reduced to near zero, every spot on the globe could be targeted.

The real threat is from abroad while our leaders stick their heads in the sand or even try to exploit these bad situations for some economic benefit (i.e. Iran who everyone is reluctant to stop trade with because of “money/oil”), all our so called leaders worry about is Bubba and how many shotguns he owns since these are the trendy media grabbing story lines that get lots of attention. In Germany they might chase you down if you have a swastika on a flag, as if that's the end of the world.

When we fail, when things are out of control, people and institutions tend to focus in on those things we have control over (The wife beater who feels out of control in the rest of his life does that). So enjoy your X-ray at the airport, watch the federal agents assigned to protect abortion clinics, and smile to the camera on every intersection while the real bad guys are out there are building a device capable of murdering entire cities at a time.

America under Obama has gone to her pre 911 mode regards national security.

There are times where we are fairly sure we are right but really wish we were wrong.

I agree, a goo probability that within 5 - 7 years a nuke will be lit somewhere. Then we all need to pretend as if we're surprised and shocked, as if none of this was predictable and of course the witch hunt needs to ensue, after the real culprits (policy makers that are avoiding the issues and their consequences) will be long gone. It's no different with government deficit spending etc. We look and worry about there here and now not the consequences later.

Pakistan-India
Iran-Israel
North Korea-South Korea/Japan/USA

Soon, Japan (not really worried about them) will join the ranks, likewise because of Iran other Middle East nations will begin pursuit of such systems, Saudi Arabia being the obvious one having the money and infrastructure to support such a program...

BUT! The US is reducing her nuclear arms stockpiles, cutting on defense, missile defense and Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. “It's all good,” and Der Spiegel thinks we're on the right track, so everything has to be OK.

The bomb designed by Dave Dobson and Bob Selden were of the “gun” type weapon and they designed 13 different models. Dave Dobson said that they had built one off the shelf and showed it to then Senator Biden. You really do not need a Phd in nuclear physics. I agree with all your statements.
