The domestic-violence case against San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi did not start with a call from wife Eliana Lopez, or neighbors who heard a fight getting out of control at the family's home on New Year's Eve day. It started with a Jan. 4 phone call to police from a friend and neighbor, Ivory Madison, whom Lopez had visited on New Year's Day. According to a police affidavit, Madison videotaped Lopez crying and showing a bruise on her upper right arm, caused, Lopez said, by her husband grabbing her.
Last month, District Attorney George Gascón filed misdemeanor charges against Mirkarimi for domestic violence battery of his wife, child endangerment and dissuading a witness, his wife. At the time I questioned whether San Francisco wants to throw the full weight of the law to prosecute a man accused of bruising his wife's arm.
I appreciate that Gascón is in a difficult position. As Bay Area Legal Aid staff attorney Minouche Kandel noted, Mirkarimi is the "chief law enforcement officer of the sheriff's office" and he carries a gun. (Actually, the sheriff surrendered his gun when he was charged.) ...Besides, if Gascón had not filed charges, there would have been an uproar.
On the other hand, Lopez does not want the criminal case to continue and objects to the restraining order that prevents Mirkarimi from talking to her. (Last week, a judge granted Mirkarimi visitation rights with the couple's 2-year-old son.) A former telenovela actress from Venezuela, Lopez told Caracas radio station Noticias24, "This is a case of political persecution."
And: "I am not a little Indian girl gringo victim."
Yet she may be a victim of a system that, in the worthy goal of trying to protect women, also infantilizes them.

If I start treating women like children, who will protect me from them?
Barney?
Money money money... the state wants its money, so a civil suit or divorce will not do, everything must be criminalized and all must see a crime has been comited.
And, then, we got the “I’m a victim” welfare pay check at the end of the line and tunnel. That’s a very attractive position for any girl out there who wants her insured state issued biscuit.
So we live in a society where to be a victim and getting that paycheck has become a spiral of death, suicide, depression and what not, courtesy of ambulance chasing lawyers getting into the criminal justice system.
Indeed Barney. Men too, now are becoming feminist victim whores, with gay rights and what not. This stuff is sick. And this presumption that she has been attacked instead of her being the attacker is virtual condemnation by procedure intimidation.
America does not need to go on strike and protest tax paying, the government is doing that for us with the victim mentality. So, men, doing things like going in the Army or becoming a cop has become like a hobby for killing people and idiots. Other than that, it is pointless at this point in time to be anything of any honor to these people.

America does not need to go on strike and protest tax paying, the government is doing that for us with the victim mentality. So, men, doing things like going in the Army or becoming a cop has become like a hobby for killing people and idiots, while playing the “winning hearts and minds of victims” BS card that the arabs have quickly learned. Other than that, it is pointless at this point in time to be anything of any honor to these people.
A lot of these spousal fights occur because 1) there is no cooling-off place for one of the two to go, or 2) in the heat of an argument there would be a place to retreat. It’s for that reason that it often would be a good idea for a couple to have a vacation house for one of the two to go to.
And if they decide to either legally separate or divorce and both want to stay in the same area, voila! There’s a place of one of the two (I would think for the male since the woman often—I guess—is awarded the house) to repair to.
Just an OldPossum thought.
Well, it is San Francisco. Who really knows anymore who is the husband and who is the wife? Who was born a man, and who was born a woman? Maybe both spouses are “husbands”. It must be very confusing trying to sort out “domestic violence” in that place.
Seems like a lot of women I've met have hidden trauma and a little empowerment is a good thing, but when they start coming out, the sunlight hits a lot of old traumas and those start coming out, too.
Besides, strong women are hotter anyway...a strong woman who can knock you down can be very sexy. Wrestling over the remote is better than anything that's on TV...
LOL, "victim of the system" my ass. This system exists because women WANT it. It allows them to abuse the law with zero accountability and maximum destruction towards their targets, while being defined as the victim in the process of their scorched earth, take-no-prisoners, psychotically vindictive rages.
So from their point of view, what's not to like?
“Its for that reason that it often would be a good idea for a couple to have a vacation house for one of the two to go to.”
Or they could just grow up and learn not to let things get out of hand.
What a bunch of schlock from Debra Saunders, a “conservative”.
Mirkarimi has beat up and threatened other women.
He’s a big lib from the “green” party.
Christine Craft is a “feminist” from the “It’s alright to beat up women as long as you support abortion” crowd. I’m sure she loves Billy Clinton, too.
