You have to hand it to Barack Obama. He has unmasked in the most thoroughgoing way the despotic propensities of the administrative entitlements state and of the Democratic Party. And now he has done something similar to the hierarchy of the American Catholic Church. At the prospect that institutions associated with the Catholic Church would be required to offer to their employees health insurance covering contraception and abortifacients, the bishops, priests, and nuns scream bloody murder. But they raise no objection at all to the fact that Catholic employers and corporations, large and small, owned wholly or partially by Roman Catholics will be required to do the same. The freedom of the church as an institution to distance itself from that which its doctrines decry as morally wrong is considered sacrosanct. The liberty of its members – not to mention the liberty belonging to the adherents of other Christian sects, to Jews, Muslims, and non-believers – to do the same they are perfectly willing to sacrifice.

Many of the new bishops are blameless in this, but the Archbishop here in St. Louis sent his second letter, and it was just as weak as the first. Where is the one who will call evil by its name? Oh yeah, he was called to Rome.

This has been posted several times today on FR... but none can too much! Given the “page life” of most posts is about 10-15 minutes before being pushed off to the next page. I have no problem with the reposts. This is TRUTH! How the Left tyrants use our good hearts as weapons against us!

Twice and neither one was posted in its entirety. It is far too complex for the majority of FR posters to absorb. Hence, it lends itself to ‘sound bites’, none of which are valid outside the full text.
The link works on this post. I like this guy’s point, and he is the only writer I’ve seen with the nerve to call Bernardin what he was; a heretic.
Now the AmChurch may have to risk schism to reassert moral authority. I don’t mind that people sin; I don’t like the sanctimonious cross-waving by folk like Pelosi and Kerry.

Catholics and Conservatives everywhere have the argument wrong and are going to fail to have this absolved or even resolved sufficiently.
This is not about what Catholics believe specifically about birth control or abortion. It is about passing a law that infringes or “abridges” the freedom of religion. By collecting taxes and then using those funds to subsidize that which goes against the faith of one religion or another goes against the constitution.
To argue who should be exempt is to suggest only those in an association related to the Catholic faith are affected.
First, requiring an American to purchase a product under the threat of penalty (fines) is unconstitutional. Then including in the first unconstitutional law a “rule” that requires Catholics to promote that which they go against is about the same as brutally dismembering and mutilating a dead body.
We are getting tricked into arguing their points with them again.
And, for the record, the Catholic Leadership has themselves to blame for having to be in the situation. They supported all these charitable social programs and have gone against individual liberty at every turn, except illegal immigration (then every individual is special).
The church finds themselves in THAT spot. Who is left to fight for us?

Some fair points in the piece — I can’t stand liberal churchmen just as much as the next guy — but overall it was pretty simplistic and somewhat inflammatory. Rahe is not ignorant and knows what he is doing. For example when he talks about there being a “pact with the Devil”, he must know that rhetoric conjures up the old anti-catholic lies about the Pope being the “antiChrist”, etc.
One thing that ties together Obama, the radical Left and some Freepers is a hatred of the Catholic Church. Unfortunately I think Rahe’s piece encourages that.
What a shame you feel you have to add that. I understand completely, though. If I point out any of St. Newt's flaws, I feel compelled to add that I will vote for him -- and I will. But the new political correctness among many here is annoying.
And I would point out that the vast majority of the Protestant Church has understood this and has come out vociferously against the abridgment of religious freedom. But the Catholics do have some house cleaning to do with a bunch of those American Bishops who supported Obamacare and couldn't see this slow pitch softball of obviousness coming down the pike to hoist them by their own petard. In the meantime we'll work on the logs in our own eyes too. I see a reassertion of our religious rights under the 1st Amendment to be a potential rallying point for Christian conservatives. It better be, in a much broader application than what we are talking here, too.
That's the crux. This is all about the Left getting to define the terms of the argument, as usual. In that sense, Obama has already won. His opponents - in this case the RC hierarchy in America - have implicitly conceded that he has the right and authority to say who shall or shall not be exempted from his rule by decree. They're just negotiating over what percentage of their former rights and freedoms they'll be allowed to keep. For now.
