Two months after successfully marshaling public support to extend a payroll tax cut for all Americans, President Obama today is attempting to do it again.
At the White House this morning, Obama will showcase supporters who were among the thousands that spoke out online and over social media in December to pressure Congress to compromise.
But the deal was only temporary. Taxes will rise on 160 million Americans at the end of the month unless lawmakers act again, and congressional negotiators remain at impasse.
Your voices changed the debate and reminded Washington what was at stake, Obama says in a video posted on the White House website. Well once again I need you. We all need you to speak out.
The administration hopes to spark a social media blitz, with average Americans concerned about their paychecks taking to Twitter using the #40dollars hashtag or posting their opinions on Facebook or the White House blog.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they believe the payroll tax holiday should and will be extended through the end of the year, saving a family making about $50,000 a year $40 per paycheck.
But whether they can agree on the fine print in the next 14 days remains unclear.
At issue is how to offset the cost of the tax cut and whether to extend unemployment insurance benefits and deal with the Medicare doc fix at the same time.
House Republican leadership Monday proposed as a last resort passing the payroll tax cut extension alone, through the end of the year, and dealing with the other issues separately.
But Democrats are reluctant to consider the items separately, believing that doing so would compromise passage of all the items.

There, fixed it for you.
Seriously, this is just another plank in the WorkingFamilies-vs-TheRich platform the 'RATS have been building for decades. Once they get to the point where 55%-to-60% of Americans are (or, believe they are) receiving government assistance rather than paying taxes, it's Game Over. Democrats will rule in perpetuity.
Is it sustainable? Yes but, only if they do it right. They'll need to crank up the taxes on the 40%-to-45% left paying the bill. Then, they can work on balancing the budget so their gravy train can roll on forever. If the remaining taxpayers get discouraged and start slacking off, ... That might be a problem. (But, who cares? That's for the next generation to worry about! /sarc)
I’m not real familiar with Titter. Why are my tweets not showing up?
#40dollars, or 30 pieces of silver?
If you meant Twitter, I can only guess you're looking in the wrong place. (Otherwise, maybe try looking for your Teets?)
Mine are showing up just fine and I just signed up today. In fact, now that I Tweeted my mind to both the @whitehouse and @BarackObama, I'm wondering if I should expect my first-ever IRS audit.
That’s my take as well.
The whole point of the “payroll tax break”
was to remove the only tax that most of his supporters actually DO pay.
tweet louder
My 'teets' I can find okay. LOL
I watching #40dollars feed, but none of my tweets show up there. I can see them on my Home link. I've also posted @BarackObama and don't see them.
Is that loud enough?
Not sure what to tell you. Mine showed up there immediately. Maybe right after you Tweet, click the #40dollar link in your post. That will take you to the #40dollar feed and hopefully, you’ll see yours. If not, try clicking the “All” link at the top of the feed (the default is “Top”).
If you wait too long to look, yours will be pushed down the feed as they’re coming in pretty fast. Lots of good ones, too, mixed among the dumb sheeple’s.
Since this “tax cut” comes only out of Social Security, I am shocked that AARP is not raising a stink about this.
Oh, I forgot they’re in Obama’s back pocket....so, nevermind
I’ve done all that. Still not showing up. Probably just me. I’m not able to sign into Twitter using Opera either, had to use IE.
My next tweet: @BarackObama #40dollars Why are you raiding the Social Security fund? Leave Grandma alone!
Let me know if you see it.
After you post that, try this Search:
But, since I'm new at this, I can't say for sure if "realtime" means it won't take some time for yours to appear in search results and I don't care to Tweet anything just to find out.
This is fun!!
I commented on this at whitehouse.gov
“$40 pales by comparision to the $20,000 per capita that’s been added to the national debt since Obama has taken office.”
Ha, “Whether they can reach an agreement in 14 days...” Its a leap year, they have 15. Press can’t get anything right.
