Pew study: 2 million dead Americans on active voter rolls

Nearly 2 million dead Americans are still on active voter registries, and 1 in every 8 registrations in the United States is invalid or has major inaccuracies, according to a new study.

Research released Tuesday by the Pew Center on the States shows that the country is spending more on voter registration while getting worse results than other nations such as Canada. The study points to antiquated systems that don’t reflect modern technology and fail to address the biggest obstacles to maintaining accurate, up-to-date voter-registry databases.

Almost 3 million Americans are actively registered to vote in multiple states, while about 12 million have old or error-ridden addresses listed on their registrations, likely preventing voting-related mail from reaching them. And 1 in 4 eligible citizens — 51 million in total — aren’t registered to vote.

“Voter registration is the gateway to participating in our democracy, but these antiquated, paper-based systems are plagued with errors and inefficiencies,” said David Becker, Pew’s director of election initiatives. “These problems waste taxpayer dollars, undermine voter confidence and fuel partisan disputes over the integrity of our elections.”

The problems aren’t for lack of financial investment: The United States spends 12 times as much to maintain voter lists as its neighbor to the north.

A 2008 Pew study conducted in Oregon found taxpayers footing a bill exceeding $4 per voter to keep lists up to date, and the numbers in Wyoming are similar. By comparison, Canada spends less than 35 cents per voter to create and maintain its lists, and 93 percent of its eligible population are registered to vote.

Pew’s research suggests that elections authorities need to take a more active approach to rooting out errors and keeping lists current, rather than relying on voters to correct errors and make changes to their registration.

Electronic records collection should replace paper forms that lead to errors when officials have to manually enter data from the forms. And data-matching computers should be employed to take advantage of other available government databases that might already contain the correct information authorities need to keep voter records current.

Pew commissioned the nonpartisan research firm RTI International to conduct the study, using databases from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Our voter rolls are a mess— not because it’s a technological challenge to fix them up. Democrats like the situation just the way it is.

I started to really realize the depth of our trouble when, after the 2000 presidential election fiasco, NEITHER party wanted to engage in serious talk about voting reform.

Al Gore had the election "stolen" from him -- and his party did not promote reform.
George W. Bush was commonly seen as "selected" by the courts, not elected by the people -- and his party did not promote reform.

They are all the same, they are all enjoying the fruits of a broken system.

The Leftists at the Hill and PEW are obviously pushing this story in behalf of the "51 million unregistered" and not the 1 in 8 erroneous/fraudulent registrations. Since the're also wrapping the issue around governmental costs, their undisclosed goal is to provide ammo to Democrat politicians for registering more people:
"A 2008 Pew study conducted in Oregon found taxpayers footing a bill exceeding $4 per voter to keep lists up to date, and the numbers in Wyoming are similar. By comparison, Canada spends less than 35 cents per voter to create and maintain its lists, and 93 percent of its eligible population are registered to vote."
What those Leftists will not tell you - for equally obvious reasons - is that Canada requires voter identification: Voter Identification at the Polls (Link to Official Canadian Gov't Website)

I once catered a democrat campaign nite in Vegas, the person running the campaign was a longtime client so her guard was down around me. What I witnessed was a very sophisticated computer software on every voter, that was over ten years ago. I can promise you wiping the dead off the rolls “could” be done in a week.

I know, for a fact, of a convicted felon on the NH voter roll. He hasn’t voted since his conviction a few years ago, but if he did, he’d vote republican.

I asked to be buried in Chicago so I could continue to vote after death, and now I find out it could be anywhere?

Screw you Chicago.

The only downside I can see is I have to vote Democrat.

God must love irony.

The Mexicans don’t mess around with “voter fraud”

.here’s how they deal with voter fraud issues south of the border....and ..its all you need to know about the treasonous, malignant American Left....

“...the Mexican Voter I.D. card has NINE security characteristics, including a fingerprint, a photograph, watermarks and holograms. What is more, in Mexico, the lists of electors that are distributed to political parties include the photo and the full name and address of the electors.”

tip of the iceberg, what about the LIVE illegals?

Illegals (at least Mexican illegals) don't vote. Trust Mikey on this.

My wife is a Mexican National, here legally after several interviews, visa hearings, lawyers meetings, and thousands of dollars, thank you very much.

She knows several illegals, and they think, naively, that our system is like theirs.

In Mexico the primary source of identification is the Voter Registration Card. It has your photo, signature, and thumb print. You need this to get a Passport, their version of Social Security, and almost anything else Government related.

With this in mind, they do not even attempt to vote. Why? Because they think they will be asked for their Voter Identification Card.

Only the responsible vote and the responsible illegal keeps their head low and opinions to themselves.

BTW: when illegals discover that my wife has a REAL work Visa and Permanent Resident status, they cut off all contact.

They don't even trust her. Too much to lose.

The cost is so high and the results are so bad because the Democrats want it that way. The same can be said of public education and public assistance programs.

"Illegals (at least Mexican illegals) don't vote. Trust Mikey on this."

I'll trust you that those you know don't, but you're dead wrong beyond that. There have been many articles on many incidents of illegals and unnaturalized aliens, particularly Mexicans voting illegally. So many that John Fund dedicates an entire chapter, "Voters with Borders," to it in his book "Stealing Elections: How Voter Fraud Threatens Our Democracy." Some examples are:

- The illegal alien who assassinated Mexican presidential candidate Luis Colosio was registered to vote in California
- The Sanchez defeat of Congressman Bob Dornan in 1996 in California

But there are many other instances across the country that you can even check with a simple Gogol search of "voter fraud illegals"

As post # 4 (mo) documents, you can't get away with that $hit in Mexico!
