FEBRUARY 15, 2012 Romney Races to Defend Michigan State Up for Grabs as Santorum Surges

BY JOSEPH B. WHITE AND NEIL KING JR.

[Subscriber Content Preview] DETROIT—Amid signs Rick Santorum could win an upset victory in Michigan, Mitt Romney escalated his campaign to win the state's Republican primary by taking on the powerful auto union and reigniting the debate over the federal bailouts of two Detroit auto makers.

Mr. Romney, writing in a Detroit News editorial-page column Tuesday, attacked as "crony capitalism on a grand scale" the Obama administration's $81 billion auto-industry bailout nearly three years ago.

The salvo comes as Mr. Santorum is surging in polls nationally as well as in Michigan. A Santorum win in Michigan's Feb. 28 primary, a week before the March ...

No need to act like the proverbial three monkeys.

Check this out: (Nearly 20% different in favorability ratings between Santorum and Gingrich: Gingrich is finishing last in MI. He’s toast)

This is an excerpt from Public Policy Polling. “Rick Santorum has all the momentum in Michigan right now,” Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, said in a press release. “But it’s important to note that more than 50 percent of voters say they could change their minds in the next two weeks. There’s a lot of room for this race to shift back toward Romney in the coming days.”

“Voters were more likely to have a favorable opinion of Santorum (67 percent) than Romney (49 percent) in the PPP poll.”

“If Gingrich dropped out of the GOP presidential nomination race, his support is more likely to flow to Santorum than Romney, the poll indicates. If just Romney, Santorum and Paul were in the race, Santorum would get 48 percent (up from 39 percent if Gingrich were in) and Romney 27 (up from 24 percent).”

Voting for santorum is like voting to give Bush a third term. I for one have had enough of compassionate conservatism and I have no desire to elect richy cuningham to position of POTUS. Newt is the only candidate with a record of conservative legislative accomplishments. That is just a fact.

I understood Gingrich wasn’t actively campaigning in Michigan, so Santorum should have a clear field to attack Romney (with Romney of course attacking back).

I would be surprised if Gingrich or his SuperPac tried to tear Santorum down in Michigan just to give Romney a victory. Remember, Gingrich said after Iowa that his number one goal was to stop Romney any way he could, even if he had to sacrifice himself.

If he started attacking Santorum in states where Gingrich couldn’t win, that would be the opposite of what he said he would do.

Wasn’t that the story where Adelson said he might give $10 million to attack Rick Santorum, because if Newt couldn’t win, he wanted Romney to win because he thought Santorum was unelectable?

Hopefully not before he beats Romney in Michigan. If Romney wins Michigan, the news media will be non-stop “Romney has overcome his downturn and is back on the inevitable path to victory”.

I know it won’t be true, and yes, we could still possible stop him, but beating him in Michigan seems doable now, and it would be to Gingrich’s advantage as well as all conservatives to have Romney lose that state.

Santorum did not endorse Gingrich in Florida, nor would I expect Gingrich to do so in Michigan. But Santorum didn’t run any ads in Florida, and his SuperPac didn’t run any ads either. He certainly didn’t run ads attacking Gingrich in Florida. He wasn’t even IN florida for several days, he went home, and then went out to try to slow Romney in Nevada.

That’s all I would expect from Gingrich — not to run ads attacking Santorum in Michigan, and for his SuperPac not to attack Santorum in Michigan. Gingrich can’t win Michigan, he’s not competing there, so if they were to attack Santorum there, it would only for one purpose — to give Romney the win in Michigan.

Hey Charles Wayne- that was the story- and what a fiction it was. I’m hoping Adelson gives the money to Newt- because I believe Newt would make the best President out of the bunch.

But, that Adelson is giving money to Newt so that he can split the conservative vote— that’s nonsense. If Romney wanted Newt in the race for that purpose, Romney wouldn’t still be spending millions running the negative ads in Migh— where Newt isn’t even campaigning. Or- having his mouthpieces in the media, calling on Newt to step down.

If Adelson gives Newt money— it’s for Newt to win.

We want Newt to win and never drop out because he has a ruthless brilliance the rest don’t have. He would be the best president ever.

In three polls, Santorum is beating Romney despite Gingrich. Multiple candidate primaries are not new. If one can't beat multiple candidates, than he's not a good candidate. Besides that, Newt isn't even really contesting Michigan. He hasn't been here, concentrating on other states because he doesn't like his polling here.

Right now, I'm out to stop Romney. He's the problem. He's a fraud, untrustworthy, and dare I say it the most unelectable person running. He lost to McCain. In MICHIGAN, the person to stop Romney is Rick Santorum, who leads him in three different polls. Santorum's campaign see this, and hence he's campaigning here.

I guess Adelson could be lying about his motives. He’s not the candidate, and so he’s not under any obligation to be truthful.

I had no clue who Ashley Wilkes was.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Wilkes

“In short, Ashley loves the South, but not necessarily the Confederacy. And, he hates war, though he fights because of his loyalty to Georgia.”

Newt is the most intelligent, most experienced and knows better than anyone else who the enemies are. But I am not sure that he can beat Obama because it is so clear what he supports (sad statement). Santorum does not carry the personal baggage that Newt does, but I don’t think he would have the sense of direction and purpose that Newt would.

Newt did however sign onto the Global Warming Scam and had that interview setting next to Her Pelosi. (very very poor judgement)

The imperative is to defeat Obozo and his minions in November. Whoever the nominee is, I will vote for them, and then try to help settle the internal scores to get the job done. The job does not end with with election, the job ends when we remove ALL the Commie Traitors from positions in government. ALL OF THEM.
