Newt Gingrich has never been shy about his love of zoos.

Gingrich spent a few extra moments staring silently at an elephant, a subtle nod to the GOP mascot, he said. Sweet Land of Liberty, a childrens book written by Newts wife, Callista Gingrich, takes a guided tour of American history with Ellis the Elephant.
Gingrich showed no such interest in visiting with donkeys, which may or may not live at the zoo.
Asked whether the time-honored institutions were becoming an endangered species, Gingrich said there are some fanatics who dont understand the importance of zoos.
